Bangkok Police confirms 2013 Songkran celebrations ended without safety hiccup

BANGKOK, 19 April 2013 (NNT) – As the annual Songkran holidays drew to an end, the capital police have come out to confirm that all houses put under its surveillance have been safe from theft and burglary during the celebration period.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Maj Gen Adul Narongsak, who is also the Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said that there have been 1,534 houses signed up for the city police’s protection during April 8-17, when the whole country celebrated the Thai New Year festival.

Police Maj Gen Adul stated that, as of Thursday, owners of 1,107 houses have returned and confirmed that there has not been a single house fallen prey to theft and burglary during the mentioned period.

He added, while the celebrations in Bangkok have passed almost without a hitch, a shooting by an unidentified number of men in Soi Inthamara 29 killed two Songkran revelers and injured seven others. At the same time, a Lao national was shot dead after Sam Rae Metropolitan policemen fired at a group of street racers but the bullet hit the ill-fated woman.

The Deputy Metropolitan Police also said that, during the Songkran period, the number of road accidents and casualties in Bangkok fell almost half from the same time of last year

"..........Sam Rae Metropolitan policemen fired at a group of street racers but the bullet hit the ill-fated woman."

The penalty for speeding has obviously been increased. One might think a manslaughter charge is likely, but TIT.

Why do you have to sign up for police protection??? They are supposed to protect everyone the best they can at all times. This is ridiculous.

How can you stoop to such a ridiculous mischaracterization? If someone was going to be away from their home for several days they alerted the police to this vulnerability. That is the context of "sign up." It is a prudent practice used by citizens and local police forces not just in Thailand.

I wonder how much they had to pay for this protection?

So let's just ignore the carnage on the roads but of course most happened in the provinces so maybe it doesn't count

This article is noteworthy information. Nobody but you is implying that tragedy in other locations has been ignored.
