Pornthip loses director job at forensic-science agency

Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunan was Tuesday removed as the director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science and transferred to the post of inspector-general for the Justice Ministry.

Her transfer was approved by the Cabinet during its weekly meeting yesterday. The Cabinet also approved her appointment as an adviser to the committee in charge of implementing policies to tackle the southern insurgency.

A well-informed source said Justice Minister Pracha Promnok planned to seek Cabinet's approval for Pornthip's transfer much earlier, but he did not have a justification to do so.

Pracha tried to blame Pornthip for procurement of the GT-200 fake bomb scanners, but Pornthip was claimed not to have been involved in the deal.

Later, Pornthip's deputy, Anek Yomchinda, testified to the National Anti-Corruption Commission that he had signed the order to buy the GT-200 devices as ordered by Pornthip, the source said.

The source added that the justice minister also wanted to end alleged conflict within the institute by moving Pornthip to the vacant position of inspector-general. Pornthip reportedly has had brushes with her deputies.

The Cabinet also approved several political appointments, including:

- Suchart Lainamngern as assistant secretary to the transport minister, acting as secretary to Deputy Transport Minister Prin Suwannathat

- Jirat Nithianantaporn as assistant secretary to the transport minister, acting as secretary to Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Chanruangthong.

- Sugarno Matha as assistant secretary to the education minister.

- Anusorn Piamsa-ard as secretary to the social development and human security minister.

- Sombat Rattano as assistant secretary to the interior minister.

She appears to be a smart woman ,not sure how the Thai " generals" got her to endorse the GT-200 while they themselves were in hot water. Curious if it was by money , or by arm twisting.

Either way, she hung herself out to dry. Sort of sad, as her reputation prior to the scandal was perfect, she was considered to be one of the most honest people in Thailand. Oh well, everyone has their price.... :-(

I can't believe someone with her forensic background would approve something like that without confirming that it worked.

I would that suggest she is the ideal fall, er, guy, since they've had it in for her since 2004.

She was one of the people I most admired in Thailand and I followed everything she did very closely. She was a scientist without reproach. I remember well some of her statements about the effectiveness of the GT-200.

I lost nearly all respect for her. No one set her up. She set herself up. I would still like to know why she did that.

That said, the GT-200 scandal does not negate the many other things she did.

Has to be said - she burnt her credibility already.

Saw her a few weeks back at the baggage carousel at Changi where a bunch of Thai lasses were crowded around her asking for a picture with Ajarn.

I stuck a bendy straw in a bottle of water and told her it was a bag detector worth US$25k and that it would find her bag 50% of the time.

For some reason she was not amused. Go figure. I couldn't even clinch the deal with a few old SIM cards, I mean, program cards - one to detect an overabundance of backcombing and one to find hair color for parrots.

At the time, presumably the army leant on her very hard.. But remember, charges against anti yellow people and police during the break up of the yellow protests were brought on the back of her investigation using the GT 200 to state they were in possesion of explosives.

She became politicised through her love of the media, and her anti police stance meant that her only friendly port was with the army and the dems.

She should have stayed apolitical.

After graduating medical college she sat for the USA exams, then gained a residency training position at walter reade hospital, USA. Did a lot of forensic work often contradicting police (proving them wrong) Has been sued by police. OK, she may have been involved in the bomb detectors but it does not nullify the positive contributions.

By the way, when did you graduate medical college and where di you do your residency training?

It is a matter of little consequence where she trained.Why you think my own educational background is relevant I have no idea.

Her record of incompetence is well documented.Obviously in her career there were some achievements (how could there not be?) but they are overwhelmed by the negatives.

She has also pi**ed off the police on a number of occasions by proving their assessments wrong, with such scientific observations as "If it is suicide, how did he shoot himself in the head five times?"

And the Khunying has other affiliations that the PTP and Red Shirts don't favour.

i have to admit I never knew she was involved with the fake bomb detectors purchase and I only ever saw her at loggerheads with the Police Forensic Division and her frustration at being challenged by people who had nothing like her qualifications or experience. On that particular point does anyone know if any in Police Forensics actually have relevant qualifications or is just a post they apply for or are transferred to ?

I think this has been a long time coming. Justice Minister Pracha has never liked her because of both of their affiliations.

Earlier in her career, she established herself as the best forensics analyst in Thailand - the cream rose to the top. Later in her career she appeared arrogant and not scrutinising enough in her analysis - she got rich, famous and lazy.

As for the GT-200 involvement - she may have authorised her deputy to sign for it, maybe due to some misplaced confidence, but it wasn't her that signed for it.

She certainly was never a fraud, although maybe she decided to become a charlatan at some point.

She was dragged out by the army to endorse it. Hundreds of arrests down South have been made on the basis of this hokey device. Also, she made statements about how PAD supporters died concerning whether they died to to explosives from their own side or from being hit by police tear gas, using GT 200 as part of her evidence. If remember, she was sitting in the press conference wearing a bright yellow shirt, which at the time, was a pretty clear sign of her allegiances.

She stopped just investigaing the evidence, and started to be used as a political tool.

The mess, caused a lot of very senior coppers to be put up on charges (deseved, but nonetheless dodgy since Pornthip apparently used GT 200) so you see, she basically used GT 200 to smear senior coppers in Bangkok, so now it is payback.
