Presidential Elections Begin in Iran

TEHRAN, June 14 (RIA Novosti) - Over 60,000 polling stations opened across Iran on Friday as the Islamic Republic votes in its 11th presidential elections.

The vote is due to end at 18:00 local time [13:30 GMT]. About 50.5 million people out of Iran’s population of some 75 million are eligible to vote, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for a high voter turnout. According to Iranian media forecasts, the turnout will be above 60 percent, about 25 percent less than during the 2009 polls.

Iranian citizens abroad will be able to cast their ballot at 290 polling stations in 96 countries.

A runoff will be held on June 21 if none of the candidates gathers more than 50 percent of the vote. Recent opinion polls indicate that the runoff is likely.

Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said on Thursday his ministry, charged with security and organizing issues, was absolutely prepared for the polls.

I guess a show of hands may result in a lower count due to the number of amputations. P.S May the best man win.

The world's collective view of Iran isn't going to be changed by the present sham election process. The Pew Center had conducted global polling, on a country by country basis, for more than a decade and finds that presently, in the aggregate, global opinion of Iran is 29% favorable and 59% unfavorable.

The world's view is based on two factors in Iran. They are the nuclear program and the brutal suppression of the Green Revolution that followed the corrupt and rigged presidential elections of the last time.

Interestingly, Indonesia and Malaysia, two Muslim majority nations of Asean, have favorable views of Iran. The favorable views are bolstered by extensive trade and cultural ties with Iran.

Iran has huge approval in Pakistan, which also has suffered Western sanctions and in Palestine which means surprise surprise further trouble in the ME. Iran continues to have strong support in Turkey as well.

In the West, majorities unfavorably viewing Iran are huge, as is the case in Israel, none of which comes as a surprise.

Iran's latest Ayatollah approved president coming down the pike means no change to the present circumstances in Iran or the world's highly negative view of the Islamic Republic.

Thailand was not included in the countries surveyed by Pew, but the current, outgoing president's visit to Chiang Mai recently doesn't help Thailand's image in the world.

Iran Is Deeply Unpopular, Except Among Asia’s Muslims

Ahmajiedad is also hugely popular in Africa and Latin and central America, two huge continents. When he visited Africa recently he was treated like a rock star. Bizarre! Maybe it's because he refuses to bend over for Uncle Sam! The same reason why the late Hugo Chavez was respected just about everywhere apart from the US and their lackey's. You Americans have a lot to learn about the world of 'real politick'. Whether you like it or not, despite lack of Western style education, people recognize hypocrisy and double standards when it is staring them in the face!

The vast majority of Western people are retarded when it comes to the United States, subcultural. Your are convinced you know us, but you don't know beans. You deal in intellectual clichés, stereotypes, cultural glibness and the mundane.

What, are we supposed to put resources into Africa and Latin America to conduct an "education" campaign, or attack style politics into a continent and a subcontinent, not to mention the isthmus of Central America? In Central America most governments recognize the Republic of China in Taiwan as the one and only China. That's not too shabby on our part, much closer to home, especially concerning the Panama Canal.

The governments of the African countries, which control the media, condition their populations while they steal them blind. Some of the S American subcontinent is experiencing a leftist phase right now - however, as much as I disliked Margaret Thatcher, she spoke truth that socialism fails when they run out of other people's money. Witness western Europe which has enjoyed generations of spending other people's money and now have found they've put themselves in a pickle. And worse yet, refuse to face the consequences. Germany was always going to dominate Europe, sooner or later, one way or another.

The addition of women wouldn't change anything as all the candidates would follow the Supreme Leader's, Ali Khamenei's, directions.

(Ahadonmadinnerjacket didn't and will get his after the elections)
