webfact
RICE-PLEDGING SCHEMEDemocrat seeks clarifying on reported rice imports from neighboursFile photo : ChavanondBANGKOK: -- The opposition Democrat Party on Thursday called for the government to clarify a Customs Department's report on imports of rice from Myanmar and Cambodia despite oversupply in the state's stocks.Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, said the department's figure showed that Thailand imported rice from Myanmar and Cambodia at Bt50 million and Bt20 million respectively in the first six months of this year. The imports were made after the launch of the rice pledging scheme and it was unnecessary for Thailand to buy rice from other country given excessive supply in the domestic market, he said.He added that random checks by the Food and Drug Administration found over-fumigation of rice, resulting in the existence of chemical residues at volumes higher than imposed standard in some brands of packed rice.He said the fumigation was done twice at some rice mills to prevent damage to rice in the government's stockpiles.Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today visited the rice packing plant of CP Intertrade in Ayutthaya’s Nakhon Luang district and confirmed that the company's packaged rice, under the Royal Umbrella brand, was safe for consumption and free from contamination.-- The Nation 2013-07-

Bluespunk
"Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today visited the rice packing plant of CP Intertrade in Ayutthayas Nakhon Luang district and confirmed that the company's packaged rice, under the Royal Umbrella brand, was safe for consumption and free from contamination." Now that's not quite true. She said it was free from contamination, nothing was confirmed by her eating it. Publicity stunts are not the same as a proper testing of the rice, only a legitimate, independent test will confirm it is free from contamination.

Exactly and a legit and independent test will never be permitted and we know why.
Thai at Heart
To be perfectly frank, how can it be remotely legal for rice to come into the country at all? Yet another sop to the Thai agribusiness conglomerates. You can't import a car without huge tax to protect Japanese companies but you can import rice which completely screw's a domestic industry.

Maybe the Cambodians and Burmese working here said the rice they were being fed didn't taste right and smelt and demanded rice from their home countries
Tatsujin
I'm assuming that the imported rice was imported because it's cheaper than the home-grown variety and they could make bigger profits when selling it. I'd be interested to learn just who was importing it though . . .

Robby nz
As has been said before. Cambodia says Thailand is its fourth biggest rice export market. That of course is only the legitimate market and does not include the stuff that is sold into the pledging scheme.
Halion
Over the years greed ,corruption and a blatant disregard for sustainability has dragged this country to a point where it simply a bad joke within the international community. Having ruined the beaches with massive overbuilding for their precious tourist market without thought for sanitation, transportation, infrastructure and development oversight they were left with the only Thia resource which still had credibility, Rice.!! Current exposures surrounding dangerous levels of incectiside and pesticide use, utilizing harmful compounds banned in developed nations and along with the government induced pledging scheme has put the last credible Thai resource in serious jepordy. Amazing Thailand. Outside foreign manufacturing joint ventures bringing both employment and products for domestic and export markets this country has little left to offer.
