Couple severely injured when gas tank explodes

LAMPANG: -- A couple were seriously injured after the tank of gas they used to fill balloons exploded.

The explosion impact tore off the right leg of the wife, while the husband also suffered severe cuts on both legs.

Police said the accident happened at 8 am in the Matthayom Witthaya Scool in Lampang's Muang district.

The couple were identified as Aichai and Ratree Supyuthwicharn. They were hired to make balloons for a sports event on the occasion of May Day.

They were rushed to the Lampang provincial hospital. Doctors said the husband was in safe condition while the wife was still in coma.

Yes.

I cannot remember the exact chemical equation but these tanks generate

hydrogen which is put into the ballons so they float.

Much cheaper than the safer Helium.

Hydrogen generators work on the same principle as the old Acetylene generators. Instead of using Calcium Carbide and water, they use Aluminium and Sodium Hydroxide. The main problem is that the hydrogen pressure is irregular, and because of this, it's extremely dangerous.

Having said that, I have never seen one in Thailand, and the article does not state that they were "generating" hydrogen.

I have never seen Helium being used in Thailand.

It is always the old hydrogen generator...........

Check it out at any rural fair.

Not quite sure where you are Astral, but up here they are only allowed Helium in the shopping centres and fairs. Hydrogen is banned. Probably doesn't stop them using it in out of the way places though.

Agreed, they use carbide and water, same as the old coalminers lamps of 100 years ago.

Calcium carbide and water does not make hydrogen but acetylene. CaC2 + 2 H2O → C2H2 + Ca(OH)2.

Oops :o mea culpa !

Naka

One way (out of many) to make hydrogen is Potassium and water but both expensive and dangerous (personal experience) 2K(s) + 2H2O → 2KOH(aq) + H2(g) + dt (heat) The dt part makes it self ignite when in air :D

A simple way is to use Liquid Plumber (NaOH - Sodium Hydroxide) and aluminum foil, both readily available. H2O+ NaOH + Al --> H2(g) + heat + other stuff.

Of course electrolysis is common but also expensive.

There’s a much cheaper way to produce hydrogen: spray steam on white-hot coals and out comes mostly hydrogen gas (40 percent) and carbon monoxide (50 percent), a mixture known appropriately as “water gas.” It’s the least expensive way to make hydrogen.

Ditto.. Sodium and water reacts violently releasing heat, hydrogen gas and a by product of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the process. Dangerous in the extreme, both from the hydrogen and the caustic soda. (also a very painful personal experience) :o

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Do you have any recipes that turn base metals into gold?

You sound scepticle, just look it up. Here, I'll give you a start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_gas

There is no Philosopher's stone but here is how to turn base metals into gold.

"Modern nuclear experiments have successfully transmuted lead into gold. The great expense of the procedure, however, far exceeds any financial gain. In many ways it would be more easy to convert gold into lead by nuclear means. By leaving gold in a high flux nuclear reactor for a long time then some lead could be generated"

and yet again ... I have only seen Helium being used in Thailand ...... and have been all over ... maybe Astral could tell me where to go see Hydogen genorators being used to fill balloons?
