PM says several points in ICJ verdict beneficial to Thailand

BANGKOK, 12 November 2013 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday indicated that several points in the International Court of Justice verdict on the Thai-Cambodian dispute over the 4.6 square kilometers area around Phrear Vihear temple were beneficial for Thailand.

According to Ms. Yingluck, in her address to the nation after the ICJ released its verdict, the Thai government views that the ruling emphasized the importance of the two nations holding discussions over the dispute. She added that importantly, the World Court acknowledged Thailand's arguments and adhered to its 1962 ruling, and did not rule over the demarcation issue. She added this meant the court did not acknowledge Cambodia's claim over the 4.6 square kilometers area, and also did not bind Thailand to the 1:200,000 map.

The court also suggested that Thailand and Cambodia jointly conserve and develop the Phrear Vihear Temple as it was a world heritage site.

Ms. Yingluck told the nation that the government would protect the benefit of the country and maintain sovereignty. Future negotiations with Cambodia would adhere to legal procedures as well as the Thai charter.

136960-imagepng-202124-1-wpcf_728x413.jp

BANGKOK: -- The Election Commission (EC) said it is ready to hold by-elections if all the nine Democrat Party’s MPs have resigned from Parliament membership.

EC commissioner Praphan Naiyakowit said that if all the nine Democrats have tendered their resignation as they declared, the EC would be able to hold by-elections within 45 days as stipulated under the organic laws.

He said of the nine MPs to resign, eight of them are constituency MPs and one is non-constituency or party-list MP.

He said that the EC would have to await formal notification from the Secretariat Office of the House of Representatives to confirm the resignation before calling a meeting to schedule the date for by-elections.

He said the EC board will meet today and this issue would be raised so as to prepare it for expected by-election.

He also said that MPs have the right to resign but would like all to regard peace and to refrain from using force against each other to avoid repeating the political violence in 2010.
