Storms at sea, Thailand's North and Northeast forecast

BANGKOK: -- Thai trawlers should beware of strong wind and high waves this week, as Typhoon Chun Chu makes its appearance, while residents of the country's North and Northeast should prepare for possible summer storms, the Meteorological Department warned here on Sunday.

The weather bureau said although Typhoon Chun Chu, now in the South China Sea--about 300 kilometres Southwest of the Philippines' capital of Manila--and is moving toward East Asia with the maximum velocity at its centre of 120 kilometres per hour, would not seriously impact Thailand directly, it would cause strong wind and high waves at sea.

The trawlers should, therefore, be on alert when sailing to fishing grounds or remain in port this week, the Meteorological Department warned.

Typhoon Chun Chu is expected to reach Hong Kong by May 18.

Thailand's North and Northeast will also be affected by a high pressure ridge this week.

Residents in the regions should, thus, prepare for possible summer storms with torrential rain in some areas, the weather bureau cautioned.

Seems like this front has already made it to the north. We're getting a good soaking in Chiang Mai this evening and the temperature is about 22 degrees.
