Hi,. I have had insulin dependant diabetes for over 20 years. Bangkok Pattaya has diabetic specialists, and I have been there.

If you are like me, and know quite a bit about your own condition and monitor your own blood sugars, adjust insulin doses etc, then you need a specialist who is going to add something of value - not just read blood tests back to you.i.e. Someone who repects what you are doing and can give you knowledgeable and good practical advice. I found this level of expertise lacking at BP and even at some hospitals in BKK. I think many of these so-called specialists are more 'generalists' with a knowledge of diabetes. At both Samitivej (BKK) and BP the doctors did not even request a HbAlc blood test - which is standard in England and at any good diabetic clinic.

Yesterday I went to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok and met a wonderful doctor who speaks perfect English and was really up to date on everthing. She was really into the idea of monitoring my own blood sugars, and wanted me to email results and any concerns to her on a regular basis, and made me feel the most comfortable I've felt with this illness since I left England. I stopped drinking alkohol about 5 months ago, and she was able to discuss with me and explain all the problems I have since been having with my blood sugars and how to get it all stabilised.

If you go to the Bumrungrad website, yopu can look up the names and backgrounds of all the specialists and book an appointment by email. Take the bus to BKK, Skytrain to Nana, and a courtesy van picks you from there and takes you to the hospital - runs every ten minutes.

BTW DON"T buy medication in any hospital - especially insulin and other diabetic products. Much cheaper at pharmacies outside.

Hope the above helps. :o

I go to the Bangkok Hospital every two months; the hospital is just off Petchburi Road. Here they have a dedicated Diabetic Patients Department with a Diabetic 'Workshop' and it's possible to consult a dietician and an an opthalmologist and a HbAlc blood test is done each time. As Mobi says, this test should be done as a routine check. It is so critical yet it was never discussed at the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital and I became aware of it's relevance and importance only after visiting the Bangkok Hospital.

But, if you want to have your check-ups in Pattaya, then the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital is the best place.

I agree that Bumrungrad and Bangkok General Hospital both have good endocrinologists, and diabetic specialists.

I am a type I diabetic who used to work at Bumrungrad. They now even have an endocrinologist that is used to managing patients with insulin pumps.

There is also a small, dedicated, diabetic hospital in Bangkok called Theptarin Hospital. It has an excellent reputation amongst knowledable Thai diabetics, though I have not been there as a patient myself.

http://www.theptarin.com/en/onepage.php?Sub=About is the website for the hospital.
