Dr. Burrito
Curious if anyone has any information or experiences with either. Prices, how long, etc... Thinking an overland trip there is in order from BKK Thanks, Dr. B Edited June 6, 2006 by Dr. Burrito
jackr
If you have to go by land, I'd do the train - Bkk to Butterworth (Malaysia) and then on from there. Buses are uncomfortable and dangerous. Had a smash on a trip from Hat Yai to Singapore by bus about 5 years ago. Another bus ran into the back of ours and nearly rolled us... drivers also have a tendancy to fall asleep. Why not fly with Tiger Airways? Only a couple of hours and probably not that much more than a sleeper bunk all the way from Bangkok.
ovenman
By rail, the problem area is northern Malaysia. There is one train daily that plies the Hat Yai - Kuala Lumpur route (the Langkawi Ekspres). This train does stop in Butterworth so you could take the International Express from BKK to Butterworth and make the connection in either Hat Yai or Butterworth. It's long journey by rail You need to either be making stopovers en route or be a real train buff to make it worth your while.
Thaising
jackr is right, take a low cost flight from bkk to singapore, it save you time and money.
jdinasia
I did overland once ... when I had time to stop and look at everything ... That was enough ... I'd be on Tiger or Airasia if I had to do it again
