Thailand: Looming economic problems may cause political conflicts to end

Thirachai voiced concern that if the political conflicts cannot end within the first six months, there is a possibility that Thailand will face an economic crisis. On the other hand, if the problems are resolved, then it would pave the way for economic recovery.

REALLY??? The genius in this country is breathtaking.

Think its going to have to spiral and hit the bottom, for MPs

on both sides to realize what they have done to the country,

and hopefully come together and fix all the problems Thailand

has, they say they love the country, but this does not look like

love to me,its all about self interest.

regards Worgeordie

Just what have the Dem MPs done. They have not been allowed to speak in the house and any thing they do get to say makes no difference as the PTP has the controlling amount of votes all by them selves and do not allow their members to vote their own mind. They must all vote the mind of Thaksin.

In a Governmental situation such as we have today all the blame can be laid at the feet of one party. The rest are mere people to fill seats with no power what so ever.

Thirachai voiced concern that if the political conflicts cannot end within the first six months, there is a possibility that Thailand will face an economic crisis. On the other hand, if the problems are resolved, then it would pave the way for economic recovery.

there is always the chance that he is right. But the time frame is almost up.

Not that it makes any difference the battle was going to come sooner or later. The point is that the present government is completely unwilling to reform the Government. the first step for recovery will have to be the removal of the present Government With the Senate picking a neutral P M. Also a committee set up to reform the government and have it taken to the citizens to get their opinion on it. There by having a better base to see what the people want and still offer them what is good for all of them. This committee should bee made up of people from all phases of life here in Thailand and nobody with a political bias.

This guy, like most Thais , puts the cart before the horse. He doesn't seem to understand that resolving the politicalm crisis doesn't just happen because business is bad. That's essentially the reason that Thailand has had bad governments and military coups for decades and decades. Because they just want to get on with business as usual,,but business as usual in Thailand is over. They need to have reform policies campaigned by trusted leaders and an election where these political leaders run for office based on their reform platform. The Thai people will choose. That's the way it should be.

When the ultra rich ultra conservatives agreed to fund Suthep it was on the understanding that his claim of only needing 3 days of protesting to claim his final victory was true.

As it turns out, despite the downsizing to Lumpini, he has been sucking their wallets dry for over 5 months now with no result - it appears as though they've finally had enough and are ready to cut of the money supply.

Good news for Thailand.

Hard to buy into his solution to end the current political crisis. These "zooticians" are fighting for power because it gives them the right to bleed this country dry. Even after they achieve their goals and they come to find out the country is already in economical crisis, it won't matter. They will just find some ways to squeeze some more and to bleed it drier. They are all just for their own selfish end no matter the means are.

It's time for the silent majority of Thais to stand up and just say no to this zoo-politics. If there is any Thai who still loves his or her mother country, he or she should get up and say No to the PTP and No to the Democrats! Biggest two-faced culprits and liars in modern Thai history! And take the biased media together with them too to the garbage dump!

I agree completely.

Every single one of my Thai friends says the same thing which boils down to "we are sick of both red and yellow sides" and they want an end to these extremist brigandry parties, and the arrival of new moderate parties with new leaders who are going to put Thailand first. They have been saying this to me for years.

Re; the economic collapse and how that can force new clear-thinking moderate parties to become dominant here, I see this as the only way. Thais can see that the constant red/yellow brigandry and political inertia going on for decades, is breaking the economy and crippling development. The decision to return to the political middle-ground and seek consensus among moderate progressive parties, will certainly be consensus resulting from emergency. It will be the only option left, the only question is how far and how hard the nation has to fall before this emergency consensus arrives.

Reform requires grass roots supporters elevating a leader.

They wont learn this lesson and cede power.

I am predicting major fallout, and have started a thread to discuss opportunity in the trough

It is the YL administration that have done more damage to the Thai economy than any protest has.

If this sparked an end to the crisis like you say, then surely Thailand is going to continue down that spiral, unless it ends with the PDRC winning.

Whilst you are undoubtedly a troll (talk of winning etc is just silly) I feel obliged to point out some facts.

In 2012 Thailands economic growth was 6.5% and had sat at similar levels throughout Yinglucks brief administration. In parts of Issan the economy has grown by a staggering 40% in recent years. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/06/16/us-thailand-northeast-idUSBRE95F00H20130616

Solely due to the protests this is now slashed to 3% http://www.businessweek.com/ap/2014-04-07/world-bank-slashes-thai-growth-forecast-on-unrest and thats being kind IMHO.

A PDRC "win" (ie an unelected peoples council) would dry up what little FDI Thailand has left as investors stay clear of the unknown. It would acccelerate the spiral, not lessen it. The protests are the reason for the decline, make no mistake about it.

Yingluck is a poor PM, the rice subsidy is a joke, but to say anything other that the economy has been booming under her is a lie.

Whilst you are undoubtedly a troll I still read your post. Not convinced.

One of the things that seems to go unnoticed by a lot of forein commentators is that there is a culture of 'lying to save face' in Thailand which has permeated into a culture of 'lying because we don't want you to know the truth'. Seems that honesty gets less and less diluted the higher your status is, and unfortunately this is not just a Thai problem . Until governments take the responsability of being honest with their citizens how can they expect their citizens to be honest - witness the last financial debacle - how many people had their pensions and lives totally ruined and those responsable are still living the very high life. The only way out of this in Thailand is for new elections to be called and for Thai people to take the bull by the horn and elect a government that they want not that paid for them to be elected. You cannot buy honesty and until the Thai people realise that there will be no progress -you get the governement you vote for!

PTP has the controlling amount of votes all by them selves and do not allow their members to vote their own mind. They must all vote the mind of Thaksin.

2 points

1) This is common in every democracy. The official who ensures the party vote together is called a "whip" and this can be found in every civilised democracy from the UK to Austrlalia to the US.

2) In cases of discontent in the voting public at what the whip is proposing, representatives are able to rebel against it if they so wish. Thailand is no different. The incident which started this whole mess (amnesty bill) was rejected in Thailands senate by PTP Mps following discontent on the street.

So to cut a long story short your tired, boring arguments which you spout on here every day are simply nonsese. Thailand had a functioning democracy (flawed as it was), one that was able to reject the amnesty bill and one which provided stability to maintain huge economic growth.

This has all been ruined by some sinister forces fronted by one of Thailands most corrupt politicians ever. That you and so many on here support this rejection of democracy shows breath taking ignorance or (as Ive said many times on here) a desire to distance yourselves from the red supporting bargirls you bang nightly.

They are fighting to gird and position themselves for impending power vacuum. Until the ultimate scenario plays itself out, the situation will remain fluid and unstable.

"And then he led the whole meeting in a soulful rendition of Kumbaya, while raising the possibility of world peace through cold fusion energy".

Fat chance... this is a circular firing squad and they are all performing their roles. Expect a good few more years of conflict, as the roots of this have not been pulled, and they will just keep sprouting And those are not all about Thaksin, it is about what he feeds on, the feudalism and inequality, the changing access to information, the higher education of the masses, and the desire of the rich and powerful to remain both, no matter the cost. Plus a hearty dose of corruption and close mindedness endemic in Thai society.
