Gov Maitri talks with Dr Kritsada Tansakun, President of Thai Hotels Association, Southern Chapter (orange shirt) and other hotel industry leaders.

PHUKET: -- Governor Maitri Inthusut has called on the island’s hotel industry to make greater efforts to safeguard the environment from their own waste.

Speaking on Monday (April 14) with members of the powerful Thai Hotels Association Southern Chapter and the Patong Hotels Association, Gov Maitri told them he wanted them to pay close attention to the effect they have on the environment.

He mentioned specifically the problems with wastewater, some of it from hotels, ending up as “black water” in canals in Karon and Bangtao, both of which flow across the beach and into the sea.

Boatmen in Bangtao last week complained that anyone stepping into the black water there gets rashes and skin infections.

He urged the two organisations to ensure members have wastewater systems and to make sure they work properly.

He also asked the hotels to assure the safety of their guests by making sure that fire escapes are usable, that fire alarms work, and that fire drills are held. He also said that they should put out red “no swimming” flags when appropriate.

The governor urged, them, too, to advise their guests about other matters of safety and decorum: to tell them they should wear helmets when riding bikes, and appropriate clothing. “Wearing a bikini and driving around the island is not proper,” he said.

Finally, the governor asked the hotels to keep an eye out for “tourists” who come to the island “aiming to take advantage from Phuket”.

“These might be, for example, people who stay long-term in Phuket, such as those who come here [supposedly] to learn Thai language or Thai cooking and can stay as long as 11 months.”

Amazing Thailand w00t.gif Tourist who want to take advantage from Phuket. What about the money they put into the local economy. What about the 'advantages' taken from these tourists. What a way to promote Phuket. This governor does not have a clue about public relations.

That's right governor, put your pay check in your pocket and pass the buck just like almost all of your fellow politicians and lawmakers. Do you know what the word "inspection" means? Probably not, like most of your kind. Instead of sitting on the couch posing for the cameras, ask the hotels, restaurants and bars on and around the beaches to show you how they get rid their crap! Maybe you might get a nasty surprise and on your next visit do a little bit more than tell them that you "wanted them to pay close attention to the effect they have on the environment."

In the West we have a name for people like you and it's not Master Debater! (but close)

Ridiculous. If it against the law to dump untreated waste water into the rivers and creeks, charge the offenders. Of course

as far as the hotels are concerned they want every other hotel to clean up but not them. And why should any hotel

pay the cost of treatment if they all don't and it will not fix the problem. Just like politicians who want to end the other political

parties corrupt practises but not end there own. Anyway it sounds more like a threat to keep the fat envelopes coming in or your

hotel could be inspected and found not to be in compliance. Just do your job and fix the problem. coffee1.gif

sadly the same on Samui.....an explosion of resorts and hotels but still ZERO operational waste treatment plants!!! Even the Tessabaan waste trucks just dump it up the mountain to end up in the water catchments.....

FINALLY - the country/business should go GREEN...

because they have to.
Because it's save a resource.

Because it saves money!

We have a constant "battle" in supermarkets - trying to put more things in plastic bags

Some check-out girls see it as a game - Giving us 2 bags for one item - Ha ha, she wins! (Broad smile)

How about social/environmental training...

Hum, black water flowing across beaches is not a real problem. The real problem is tourists riding around the island in bikinis! Brilliant!
