If only he was in a Ferrari....everything would be ok.

I think, not the car, the driver must have the right name or the right connections. whistling.gif

Anyone owning a Ferrari here has enough money to buy their way out.

You misunderstood me? Also if its NO Ferrari and just an ordinary car and you have the right family background its OK to! rolleyes.gif

I wonder if he had a driving licence.

Also wonder what his punishment will be.

500Baht for each life taken?

RIP to the 3 dead policemen.

The question is not if you have the appropriate age, time and money to obtain a driver license, the question here is how many death people can your family afford without starving.

I live on Barommaratchachonnanee Rd. between Putthamonton Sai 4 and Sai 3. Since early last year the BiB have selected the inbound lanes there as standard "shakedown" area. Every day there are at least 2 checkpoints between Sai 4 and Pinklao. They usually consist of 2 parasols, 2 camping tables and chairs and half a dozen red-white traffic cones. The BiB, geared up with helmet and full face mask, would stand behind these traffic cones between the lanes and flag down vehicles at random. There are no prewarning signs to reduce speed, and sometimes the checkpoint (precisely the cones and the BiB) can only be seen at the very last moment. With vehicles and motorcycles going at 80 - 100 km/h and virtually no safety distance to the preceding traffic this is a recipe for a mass pile-up.

I hope that the RTP will learn from this tragic accident and adopt a setup procedure for their checkpoints that makes safety for their personnel a priority and takes into consideration the outrageous driving habits displayed by a large part of Thai motorists.

But I have my doubts.

In the thread to the main story Police said he wasn't drunk but lost control because he was driving too fast but the headline says he was trying to run the roadblock. If driving too fast maybe panicked and lost control is quite different from the deliberate act of driving fast to get through the roadblock and should upgrade charges in respect of the deaths but TIT.

The BIB should have waited but never do before running off at the mouth to the media.

Does it really matter when 3 people are killed? Its a terrible waste of life and the driver jailed for life.

When the headline says a foreigner is killed the first 10 comments are RIP and condolences to the family.

3 police die and the tone is very different, why ??

This is a tragedy, whatever the result of the investigation there are 3 policemen dead and 3 injured, the families of these men will suffer and it seems nobody cares.

You seem to be new to Thailand.... ask some ordinary people here if they like the police.....

It is not immediately clear whether Mr. Nawapon has been charged with a crime.

C'Mon. This guy killed three innocent police officers, with a weapon, and that's what a car is. Then the other seriously injured ones.

Rest in peace and a speedy and fully recovery for the others.

How can that not be a crime? -wai.gif

Costas, please don't be a cynic,

The drivers punishment is nothing anyone can do anything about except the Thai authorities.

What if he had a driver license or not, what difference does it make for the families and friends of the killed policemen?

Do you really believe having a license in Thailand makes any difference how they drive?

RIP and my best regards and empathy to families and friends.

Costas, according to your name and the flag your avatar has, I would say you are from Greece.

For your information, I was working in Athens 2004, a couple of weeks before the olympics, I rented a motorbike and drove around almost everyday in order for me to get the most of my weeks in Greece.

In Athens and the surroundings, It's was absolutely not better than here in Thailand, much more aggresive driving and people with a hole in their head.

I would never trade Thai traffic to Greek traffic any day of the week. Not even your juristicial system, it's actually more worse than Thailand.

I learned a lot during my 12 weeks in Greece. Lets not beat our chests and proclaim being better when not.

Me neither, they are Thai police.

The carnage on the roads continues unabated. Here's an idea, actually police the road rules, add serious penalties, eg. serious fines and license cancellations, jail terms for repeat offenders and stop using check points as cash cows for the brass. RIP the men who've died, they would be so far down on the gravy train and would surely prefer to be chilling out at the station watching the football than out on the road providing targets for idiot drivers just so the boss can play up at the casino/karaoke/buy the 'little wife' some sexy lingerie or whatever it is these people do.

I do not think you are allowed to overtake on highway ramps. In any case speeding is not allowed.

naive or cynical?

Who the hell in Thailand would know what you are allowed to do when driving on the highway.

The carnage on the roads come right back to the police. Most drivers do not have licences and do not understand road rules (if there are any) The RTP are directly responsible for allowing this to continue. As far as i know, only farang are asked for driving licences, as i have been on 4 occaisions.

Only yesterday, i came to a roundabout which is about 12 mths old, on Samui. I stopped to give way to traffic coming from my right, one car bumped into me from behind, and i was overtaken by several cars and motorbikes on both sides in the mad rush to beat the traffic merging on our right. They have got no idea whatsoever and that includes the guy coming on the right who just stopped and looked at me.....................grrrrrr talk about a mob of Buffalo drivers.

At 3 million Baht a cop that's 9 million Baht, plus a ticket to Singapore, based on case law. That is, if the driver was drunk, and possibly coked up.

Otherwise it should be a lot cheaper, if there is justice in Thailand.

Lunatic operating a motor vehicle.

Lunatics entering a freeway lane and interfering with a lunatic operating a motor vehicle.

Lunatic drives off the road for reasons only a lunatic could know.

Lunatics die. Had they not been sleeping on the job, they would have been doing the same thing the other lunatic had done to make the lunatic in the motor vehicle panic and drive off road.

Lunatics all.

You simply cannot write this stuff. Endeavoring to put this all in a logical and practical sense is about as futile as taking a one millisecond snapshot of an exploding sun, and trying to explain it away as nothing more than a sun spot... whilst ignoring the before and after.

I reckon if I were to walk out in front of a motor vehicle and wave a gun or a wand, that the motor vehicle in question would also veer and lose control. I've had these dumb asses do just that about three times in the last 3 years.

They are all lunatics, and when the results or consequences are reported, and the reporter endeavors to make it like we are in a developed country, and omits all the "befores" and "afters"... then, yeah! sure! one gets that knee jerk reaction to feel sympathy.

Point being, the fault lies with the police.

I'll bet their traffic cones began about 40 meters before the stop point, rather than 300 meters, in order to allow people to begin slowing to enter the check point area. I've seen construction on freeways here. They place their traffic cones about 40 meters just before where they are using the lane for their labors. One barely has enough time to swerve to get over and avoid hitting a bunch of dumb asses standing around a Toyota sitting in the fast lane.

I may be off, but I doubt it. Name the consequences, and tell me Lies Thais are involved, and I'll call all bets off, with no limits.

EDIT: Before anyone loses a guitar string, I have read too many stories about these check point, and how the police unholster and shoot out tires and do all other idiotic things in order to get the motor vehicle to pull over... yes! even such stupid things as walking right out in front of the vehicle. They aren;t interested in having check points in order to ensure the safety of the roads, and hence to have several officers waiting in their cars, trucks or on their motorbikes to pursue and apprehend. 5 meters past any check point it is free and clear.

These check points are nothing more than for lunatics to extort money from other lunatics, and perhaps a small percentage of innocent victims simply wanting to get from point A to point B.

I never heard of any police check point in the USA having tents so the lazy, extorting bastards can sleep off their whiskey whilst on the payroll and then wake up refreshed and with a headache in order to badger and harass the general public for tea money.

Apologies, but I simply don't buy it.

Wow. A lot of coffee there!

However, you are spot on. I've almost hit my share of men in brown while they run across my path to nab a truck of sorts. This with the blinding sun in my windshield. And you're so right when they mark the stops with homemade cones with flashlight taped inside with a 40 to 50 meter warning if that.

Another time I almost hit one while he crossed in front of me while he tried to chase down a motorcycle taxi with a passenger that must have gotten past his buddy up the road. I witnessed him actually taking out his baton and hitting the woman passenger on the arm.

Nuts! Sad sad event here.

I am sorry for the tragic death of the Police Offficers. But, in the interest of preventing such tragedies in the future. I would like to take the liberty to suggest that. The Thai Police force. Review, and improve their operating procedures, at such traffic check points.
