webfact
Italian coastguard makes gruesome discoveryROME - About 30 bodies have been found in a migrant boat which was stopped between Sicily and the North African coast, Italian news agencies reported Monday, citing the navy and coastguard. The rescuers made the gruesome discovery when they boarded a fishing boat carrying around 590 refugees and migrants to evacuate those in most distress, including two pregnant women. The immigrants apparently died of asphyxiation, the news agencies said. It is not the first time Italian rescuers have found migrants dead on the overcrowded boats but never before were there such a large number. The boat is being towed by the Italian navy and is expected to arrive later Monday in Pozzallo on the southeast coast of Sicily.Full story: http://www.enca.com/italian-coastguards-find-30-bodies-migrant-boat-- eNCA 2014-06-

Credo
A sad story, but kudos to the Italian Coast Guard for towing them to shore. Some countries have been known to tow them the other direction.

However, the Oz policy has reduced the number of people willing to risk their lives to zero in the past 6 months. BTW, how many economic migrants are you willing to pay for, all 17 million and rising?

It's long past time to limit reproduction by whatever means necessary to do the job. If governments won't, Gaia will and it won't be pleasant. I cannot imagine how desperate most of these people must have been. Why not place blame where blame is due. Some of these countries and people in them need to step and take responsibility for themselves. They have been a mess for generations and their mess has nothing to do with other countries "consumption" of anything. Blaming the world or other countries' for their problems is ridiculous and serves to perpetuate the problem or bring the problem to other countries where people and their governments actually do take responsibility for themselves and/or their people. The world has changed. Immigrants used to add to an economy by providing unskilled services such as labor to benefit themselves and their new country. This is no longer the case and immigrants without any education, professional skills and financial resources are destructive to the proposed new host countries. The Oz or US was built on immigration stuff is not applicable to the current illegal migration nightmare.

ClutchClark
A sad story, but kudos to the Italian Coast Guard for towing them to shore. Some countries have been known to tow them the other direction. I would have towed them the other direction.I feel terrible for this tragedy; however, it is not Italy's tragedy. This action only reinforces the practice by all the others considering to make the journey, which means more and more stories like this in the future. Conversely, returning them to their own shore makes those wanting to make the trip reconsider--is it worth paying huge sums only to risk death or imminent return to their own shore? Incentive vs Dis-incentive. But then I do not donate to the mothers with children begging along Sukhumvit, either, even though its quite hard not to. Although I do contribute to the various beggars that are missing limbs. Edited June 30, 2014 by ClutchClark

Hmm, let me think of countries that were populated by 'ILLEGAL ECONOMIC MIGRANTS' (why all the capital letters, I am not deaf) that in the process replaced the local populations. USA? Australia? South America? New Zealand?

Now if only countries like India, Nigeria, etc would limit their population growth...

Now if only countries like India, Nigeria, etc would limit their population growth... I don't think too many people minded the one child policy, it was how it was implemented with forced abortion, sterilization etc., which was the problem. Also, the demographics of China are now presenting some challenges. Not very many young people to take care of a lot of old people. Perhaps they will come up with a maximum age policy. Again, the implementation will be what people are opposed to.

Now if only countries like India, Nigeria, etc would limit their population growth... It didn't prevent overpoulation, just slowed the rate. In India, the use of scanning machines and female abortion/ infanticide has skewd the population towards males, which may reduce the population through lack of women for breeding. Yahooka
I wish that the news in my country would use the correct description as in the OP,migrants instead of refugees...........Most of the people doing this Mediteranean crossings are migrants from mainly West- and North African countries in search of work.
