Phantoms of Flight

YANGON

Myanmar’s grim air safety record can be blamed on many causes: an undeveloped air traffic management system, antiquated aircraft and poor pilot training, to name a few.

In Myanmar and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, ghosts are said to haunt airports, popping up everywhere

from cockpits to arrivals halls. (Illustration: A.M. Two / The Irrawaddy)

But sometimes, officials at the country’s airports point their fingers to more spiritual—even supernatural—culprits.

Local ground crews, baggage handlers and tower communications workers have been known to cite ghosts and spirits as occasionally interfering with aviation logistics, while linking fatal accidents to the poor karma of airline owners, according to Southeast Asia scholar and anthropologist Jane M. Ferguson, who wrote a report titled “Terminally Haunted: Aviation Ghosts, Hybrid Buddhist Practices, and Disaster Aversion Strategies Amongst Airport Workers in Myanmar and Thailand.”

Ghosts have reportedly been spotted everywhere from immigration halls to aircraft cockpits.

I see they reference Thailand's aviation sector too... ghosts at Suvanabhumi?

There should never be a shortage of evil spirits in the region... especially of the alcoholic category! ;)

I think an exorcism is in order.

Ghosts yes maybe an energy "BUT" that energy has no bady so therefore can do

nothing physicaly....

In the West...it is called the Devil...yet it is really alcohol...and irresponsibility...

It's nice to have ready-made, defenseless culprits who can be blamed if anything goes wrong. It means, you don't have to take responsibility, or improve things. And it looks cute in a native, naïve kind of way. But, reality is coming...even to Burma.

I've given up banging my head against a wall trying to argue with my Thai partner that you don't base any decisions on ghosts and spirits.

Or just stand there with a 1-iron pointing to the sky, because as one famous golfer once said: even God can't hit a 1-iron!

Ben Franklin couldn't have said it better. I do believe the rain and being wet is not required, though.

What's the weather forecast for Martha's Vineyard? I'd like someone to test this.
