Schapelle Corby likely to stay free despite boyfriend's drug arrest
Michael Bachelard
Indonesia correspondent for Fairfax Media

JAKARTA: -- Schapelle Corby is likely to stay free on parole despite the recent arrest of her Indonesian boyfriend on drugs charges.

Bali police sources have confirmed to Fairfax Media that Corby's long-time boyfriend, Ben Panangian, 32, was arrested on August 20, allegedly in possession of marijuana.

The drugs – enough for about 40 joints – were contained in two packages, one weighing 0.64 grams and the other of 8.21 grams, local police have said.

Under Indonesian law, it is enough to earn Panangian up to 12 years in prison, though in reality sentences for possession are usually much shorter.

Corby met Panangian in Kerobokan prison, where he was serving time on drugs charges, and has maintained the relationship since she was granted parole in February. Her continuing parole is on the condition that she be of good behaviour and stay away from drugs.

Corby's parole officer, Putu Andiyani, has played down the danger that Panangian's arrest might affect the Australian's parole.

Yeah, a lot of the controversy over her initial arrest was the amount of press coverage she received, compared to others in a similar situation who were not so "photogenic".

There there was the whole "blame the brother", "blame the father", "blame the sister", "blame the baggage handlers". Reading a synopsis of the whole affair makes you wonder if anyone, anywhere, actually ever tells the truth about anything anymore !

If she was smart she'd stay far away from anything even resembling illegal drugs for the remainder of her parole. Once back in Oz she could probably get away with almost anything, but the questions will always remain about whether or not she was guilty.

Pretty hard to be a squeaky clean little mouse when you are surrounded by vile, filthy rats.

That scrubber of a woman should have styed in jail to do the full term of her sentencing,

she is guilty as sin and every body know it, her father is a drug currier and the whole

family is some how tainted with drugs, no angles here...

Went to school with these girls and was friends with her sister Mercedes. These girls have stated many times they have never touched drugs but here are some facts. Both girls experimented with drugs at parties (have seen with my own eyes), their father was a known dealer and a few other people I knew at the time got gear off him. So based on this you can make your own assumptions. I to this day firmly believe that her father got her to carry the drugs maybe unwillingly over to her sister who was and still is living in Indonesia with her husband and children. Her father is a real piece of work, knowing that he only had a short time to live, he could have stated that he set his daughter up, which he most likely did. If he did, he would have been in prison serving time for no more than 3 years when he died and Schapelle would have been able to return to Australia to continue her life. Such a waste, but play with fire and one day you will get burned.

Let's see here...boyfriend gets popped with 2 "packages" of ganja. One weighs 0.64

grams and the other weighs 8.21 grams, making a total of 8.85 grams. Divide that by

40 and you arrive at the figure of 0.22125 gram per joint. Thin? Most likely as thin as

a straight pin IMO! Ms Corby attempts to smuggle 4.2 Kilos of ganja INTO Indonesia

(Bali) and gets nabbed....so...again...IMO...both Schapelle (very strange name for a chick)

and her Indo boyfriend aren't the brightest candles in the window in the first place.

The ubiquitous "ounce" is approx 28 grams. Divide that by your 0.22 and you get 128 joints.

128 joints in an ounce? I don't know if that's reasonable size joints, but I daresay it is.
