The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- Almost 2,000 suspected criminals have been arrested in a crackdown on crime by the Provincial Police Region 1 during the Loy Krathong festival last week.

Maj-General Amnuay Nimmano, commander of the Provincial Police Region 1, told a press conference at its headquarters yesterday that 239 suspects wanted by police for different crimes and 1,659 people suspected of involvement with illicit drugs were arrested between last Sunday and Friday.

Police raids in the provinces under the police bureau's jurisdiction led to the seizure of several weapons including five shotguns, while 2,694 bullets and two TNT sticks were also uncovered.

The alleged drug users and dealers were arrested separately, resulting in the seizure of 68,942 methamphetamine pills, 14,542 grams of crystal meth, 25 pills of ecstasy, 43 bottles of ketamine and 1,566 grams of marijuana, among other illicit drugs.

Thirty loan sharks were also arrested for allegedly offering illegal lending services. About Bt300,000 cash was found with them during the separate arrests.

Yet when me and the family returned home after celebrating on the lake in Khon Kaen there was a lantern in the village pool and in our front yard.

There was supposed to be a crack down on that as well.

Though I didn't see any released at the lake as there usually are every year. The lake being only about 7 kilometers from the airport as the lantern flies.

Yes, 2000 suspects, not enough jail space so many received 100baht fines and asked not to do it again in the same province, so, look out Patong new workers coming your way or maybe beach chair vendors or maybe taxi drivers employment will help to replace the drugs the police took this week. At 2000 per weekend they may have to rent prison space, I understand Gitmo in Cuba has some extra space these days as terriost are send home to the IS.
