Pheu Thai disagrees with enforcement of Article 44

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai Party acting deputy spokesman Ansuorn Iam-sa-ard Sunday expressed concern that the enforcement of Article 44 of the interim charter would be worse than the enforcement of the martial law.

The article, when invoked, gives Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha absolute power in his capacity as the junta chief. Anusorn said the government should instead hold the next election as soon as possible.

I wonder why Pheu Thai disagrees with it when it is precisely what they were seeking (for themselves).

They should have learnt their lesson that it is unwise to hold elections when the time is not right.

Why waste time and taxpayer money on playing democracy??

Prayut is clearly aiming at absolute power!!

I agree, no reason to play democracy. Just stay in power and thereby ensure the usual corrupt and criminal politicians and paid for voters stay out of power.

Democracy is for developed countries with a mature and informed voter base.

No, democracy is a basic human right, irrespective of level of education or maturity of the voter base.

Thailand had a nascent and far from perfect democracy. But the people could select their own government. They have done so four times this century.

What they have been denied, repeatedly, is the chance to pass judgement on the government which they selected, in the democratic manner, through the ballot box. Instead that right has been usurped by a self selecting establishment clique, whose only claim to power is that they control the army. They seek power in order to regain control of the country, and its riches, knowing well that they could not do so democratically.

For a foreigner, who enjoys democracy in his home country (even if he does not appreciate it) to judge that Thailand, or more particularly the Thai people do not deserve it or should not have it is simply bloody arrogant.

Au contraire Lucky, the elections were called as per the constitution, within the time frame from absolving Parlaiment.

They were also Endorsed by the Monarchy, as per the constitution, as in by Royal Decree.

The EC said the country wasn't ready, sure it was, they (EC) weren't, they should have known what the constitution mandate stated 60 days from absolving Parliament to holding elections, in fact Yingluck's election call was slightly over the 60 days.

Human rights commissioner urges Prayut to enforce emergency decree

BANGKOK: -- Nirand Pithakwatchara, a commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission, Sunday urged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to enforce the emergency decree instead of invoking Article 44 of the interim charter when the martial law is lifted.

Nirand said Article 44 would give too universal power to Prayut in his capacity as the junta chief.

Wow it's really happening to our beloved Thailand .

And look who will be in charge!

Get used to it ...he will be a TV God .

In the future it will be forbidden ( including here) to utter words against him.

He will jail you or worse.

Thais will tremble

There will be laws once this occurs.

Imagine

Names of people ...(including here ..) ...links to accounts IP addresses.

Facebook Thais arrested over saying boo.

Media hushed.

People going missing.?

Dark times ahead ...this is real not Hollywood ...not a mischievous General with sense of humour.

A leader Psychologist says "this guy is getting drunk on power and its becoming increasingly clear his direction."

Unless he is stopped from within Thailand could be in trouble.

Things are very predictable under a nationalist xenophobic agenda

This transcends politics.

This is a decree where essentially whatever this guy says goes.

Does that mean he can order very literally that you be taken and placed in a camp without charge and all assets seized.?

Sure he might not , that's insanity.

But stare at this guys photo and what do you see?

" I would consider the transfer of power to " absolute " standing , to be a far greater threat to Thai citizens then the current structure. ""

"....taken and placed in a camp without charge and all assets seized.?"

Do you understand that the all mighty and all knowing wizards from the USA who are so happy to condemn Thailand and second guess her sovereign right to govern herself ...do this every day? Have you heard of Guantanamo Prison Camp ... or do you live under a rock?

Guess where it does not happen? Correct. Thailand.

Guantanamo is off topic, but just realize that doesn't apply to US citizens and it isn't happening on US soil. The prisoners are captured enemy combatants.

It HAS been happening to Thais - being locked up for attitude adjustments and having assets seized at the whim of the new government.

The EC clearly stated that elections should not be held - they ignored this. Remember the experts predicting that their rice scam policy was going to be disastrous? Did they listen, did they heck, and when they showed their concern that it should be halted before even more than the substantial damage that had already been done would be realised, did they listen? No, they didn't.

Now why didn't they listen? because Thaksin was running the show and his past form shows that he is not very good at this!!

So you are telling me that she violated the constitution by calling the election after the mandatory 60 day period from dissolution - she is a naughty girl for doing this, the EC should never have gone ahead with the election as it breaking the law!! Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Civil war is coming if this path continues........ Not the usual coups which are nothing

more than a changing of the pigs at the feeding trough, but a full on war from the people

rising up. And a few tanks parked in Bangkok are not going to stop that. :-(

Prayut would do himself a favor by studying world history a bit. I know, not generally

a topic of concern to Thais. However in his case it would benefit him. All rulers

throughout world history who are the "d word that can no

longer be used in Thailand" , are either overthrown or killed. There is NO middle ground.

The fat North Korean kid seems to be hanging on, but I think his time will come as

well. Prayut should use the power he has to correct what is wrong in Thailand now.

If he did that, people would sing praises of him for generations. If he keeps going down

this dark path, in the future people will talk about him, but no praises will be sung....

Civil war WAS looming hence the Coup in the first place.

And probably is still lingering in the cool dark slimy crevices of a Shinawatra brain.

Prayuth has stated many times that the time is not yet right for stopping martial law. But foreign governments and journalists are making it increasingly difficult. So he offers a solution.. No more martial law. But we still need something, well section 44 is What's left.. Martial law seems OK now, right?

Prayuth IS trying to correct the wrongs. He is trying to make the RTP accountable, there have been far more high profile busts in the last 10 months.

Simply pointing this fact out!!

If there is no point in considering my comments then why have you?

I guess the blinkers come as part of the NCPO Naivety Set? Or have you adapted some from your childhood? You really don't have to wear them you know.

A couple of other contributors have alluded to the bigger picture as well.

But you seem to be quite comfy in your small Thaksin and Yingluck are the root of all evil pigeonhole so I will leave you to roost there.

i agree with some of what you say but the high profile busts do seem selective and with so many to choose from there hasn't been that many.

As far as potential corruption goes, and other issues, the PM has made it clear he will hear nothing said about members of the NCPO.

Another total misconception. Civil war is as anathema to Thaksin as it is to those behind the coup and current administration. It is probably the only common ground between them although their reasons for fearing one are widely disparate.

What absolute horse <deleted>!

Clean water and access to adequate nutritional food are basic rights.

Democracy is a political system nothing more, nothing less!

It is according to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948,

Although on reflection you probably regard that as absolute horse shit as well!

The reason I focused on the USA is because most people hold it as the gold standard for Democracy.

Democracy seems to be the core issue here.

Your reply demonstrates a very narrow understanding of how America operates in its political and practical process.

Reality is far removed from the fantasy most people buy into ... we could debate that point, but I have learned that once a person has consumed enough koolaid, there is really no turning back. if you actually think that the people in Gitmo are "enemy combatants" that means you know exactly zero about this process and who is there. To go to the next step and then acknowledge that innocent people were captured, imprisoned, tortured and all without a trail or chance to defend themselves ... is certainly a stain on any concept of the shining light at the top of the hill .. it is not a shining light. it is a vapor trail from a drone.

As to Thai's being imprisoned and their property seized (... and this is a key difference .. without due process ...) I can not point to that case, and rely upon you to educate me now and list 5 examples of each. I honestly know little of this and would like to learn ... so the floor is yours...

Please site a few examples of this. .. well .. these examples should be easy for you, if not ... I guess you are just a bag of wind.

No they're not captured enemy combatants in all cases, mistakes are made.

So you're saying it's ok for the US government to do this, because they don't do it to their own citizens, just foreigners?

How many Thais have been "locked up" and for what period of time since the Junta took office? And how many people have been locked up and/or tortured by the US during the same period?

We'll never know the truth, but let's not pretend the US is whiter than white.

So the reader is clear .....here is what I actually did say ...the whole quote in question ( not part)

Quote

Does that mean he can order very literally that you be taken and placed in a camp without charge and all assets seized.?

Unquote

It was posed as a question.

The answer depends on just the "man" himself.

That was my point.

Not congress who allowed places like Gitmo after 9/11 to be set up.

This will be one mans call.

Not a government arm .

In fact this will no longer be a Government in terms of checks and ticks .

To pretend this situation isn't serious is irresponsible to the casual observer.

It's a very big deal , and while commentary is permitted either here or in Thai media , it needs to be said.

Thailand is in danger of serious isolation and heavy iron curtain media bans .

Execution has been threatened to media already and this situation should be monitored by expats carefully .

Visitors should heed their governments travel advice , once this power is granted

What nonsense all Thais in the last 60 years have some form of education and certainly the under 35's have a decent education!

Which is in direct contrast to all those who made the claims that Thais lacked education to be able to vote properly!!

Based on who's standards? Whilst their Educational standards may not be on par with our superior Western Intellect (intended Sarascm), they have the ability to think for themselves when they want.

Why keep having a go at the poor standard of Thai education, when there are as many problems with education in our own Western Countries, poor grammar, Christ, all you need to do is look at some of the posters here, and see that Education and lack of it isn't a Thai monopoly.

People in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones, if you thought the Thai's Education was "poor" try working with Arabs where they can't even write their own names!!

The Education system may well indeed be below Western averages, but it sure isn't the worst, it's a poor excuse by Farangs to keep stating Thai's lack the education to be able to vote properly, or to have some form of democracy.

Has anyone asked if Thais ACTUALLY WANT democracy?

What is democracy, is it the mayhem of America's governmental system! Is it the UK's system or Germany's. All different forms. Are Malaysia or Singapore democratic? For that matter Cambodia have elections is Cambodia a democratic country?

Use democratic means to determine if Thais want democracy - that is quite humourous tongue.png

It is funny that many totalitarian countries have used the excuse that the education level is too low for democracy to work, yet there is no move or incentive to "educate the masses" which would be a solution if the problem of giving the people the vote were dependant on education. It is also interesting to note that many countries were democratic long before the masses received widespread were educated. There is a vignette on TV that remembers the massive move in Canada to bring literacy to the majority of the people.

Democracy does not always produce the best government, but it provides a bloodless method to overthrow governments when they have become a very big problem. Empires (like in China) the history has high points - overthrow of an empire - high point - corruption / incompetence which weakened the empire and then the low point.... which then was followed by civil war and the overthrow of the previous empire and a new one in his place. Democracy provides the same functionality on a shorter timeframe and in a bloodness manner. It is also interesting to note that most of the richest countries in the world (that are not rich because of the accident of oil or natural resources) are democracies. So yes, democracy is a bad form of government but unfortunately there has not been a better one.

Yes democracy is far from perfect. It's like two wolves and a hen voting on what's for dinner!
