EABC proposes to revive FTA with EU for Thailand

BANGKOK, 31 March 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce has met with the European Association for Business and Commerce (EABC), which has offered to mediate Thailand’s efforts to restore its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU).

Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn has recently discussed with EABC President Rolf-Dieter Daniel over the possibility of reviving Thailand's FTA with the EU through his association.

Mr. Daniel believed it would be beneficial to the Thai economy. However, Mrs. Apiradee said that despite the benefits, both sides must be well-prepared before negotiations can commence.

She urged the EABC to be confident in Thailand’s economic policies, including regional and international cooperation, FTAs, and a foreign investment incentive program.

In addition, Mrs. Apiradee indicated that Thailand is already poised to reap economic gains from the integration of the ASEAN nations. The ASEAN Economic Community is expected to be formed by the end of this year.

EABC was established in 2011 under the collaboration of Thai and European businesses. Its purpose is to consolidate human and natural resources in the EU and assist its business in Thailand.

How is that possible? Some stupid government official is always shooting his mouth off about adopting a policy disadvantageous to foreign investment. Then, when there's a media backlash, always finding a way to worm out of it to save face.

It would be nice if there was just an even-playing field, so that Thai investment in foreign countries was treated the same as foreign investment in Thailand.

Now that is too funny. Want free trade yet you markup prices so high that no one wants to buy it then allow knockoffs to sell cheap. Example Original pair of Levi's 501 jeans at the gap in Us around 45.00 USD now same pair of original levi's jeans in Thailand between 3500 baht to 4500 baht roughly a 110% mark up. Now rice from California not allowed for import Yet you can buy in US at a reasonable price. Now Beef we farangs love beef Here you get something called beef from OZ and New Zeland The one from oz tough as leather and grassy after taste. the other I use for soles on my shoes. Any USDA Prime or Choice here? well none I seen at least Angus beef? Reply usually is who is Angus? Corn fed? you want porn fed? One day a man will get a proper steak here. You have eaten a real steak till you ate a corn and molasses fed steer. Meat is so tender you can cut it with a butter knife And the marbling in the meat. Damn got to have my uncle send me some steaks through an embassy courier like before.

A post about Thailand and the EU turns into a commercial for the superiority of American steaks over rival Australian and New Zealand meat.

Hmmm. Less of that "Strangebrew" for you young man!

EABC is another quango talk shop organization providing lucrative jobs for Europeans who might otherwise have to work. Countries have chambers of commerce here etc.

But in the EU we have to have at the European level too. Anything to push the federalist Europe ideas for some. Waste of space, and tax payers' money.

Something must be Lost in Traslation.

The EU says Thailand must approach each member with a separately negotiated trade deal as the previous Free Trade Ageement with the EU expired. Thailand does nothing. Then the EABC offers to mediate Thailand’s efforts to restore its Free Trade Agreement with the whole European Union.

And Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradee's response is, "both sides must be well-prepared before negotiations can commence." That sounds more like a "Don't call me, I'll call you." Then she comes back with Thailand will "reap economic gains from the integration of the ASEAN nations." Yeah, Thailand doesn't need an EU trade agreement as it has its own captive trade partners next door.

I'd say Apiradee is clueless.

What's even more funny is you raise US beef imports in a discussion about free trade with the EU, when most US beef is banned in the EU. (only beef from cattle that haven't been given hormones can be exported to the EU).

As for best steak... even though I'm from beef- cattle farming part of Aberdeenshire in Scotland, I'd have to say would be Kobe beef. Had a big Kobe beef steak at a Japanese steakhouse in Tokyo, and it was brilliant (pretty expensive though). I think I could have avoided using a knife at all, and could have cut it with the fork by itself.
