Thailand underperforming in halal export market

Why aren't we forcing muslims to eat pork or non-halal? Because they are doing exactly the same to us by forcing us to eat halal. For instance most schools in Sweden only serve halal food and if you as a non-muslim parent complain to the school, municipality (they "control" schools) or Department of Education that you do not accept that your children are forced to eat ritual food you are either ignored or thrown the RACIST-card.

ritual food = cheesy.gif

Either take a dictionary and read what "ritual" means or read what Tchooptip wrote.

Halal certification is a Muslim tax that has been shown to support terrorism. Time to expose the Wolf from under the Sheepskin. The rest of the World is waking up to this extortion as Muslims try to distort the facts for their own gain.

The mind boggles at how you can think that a ritual that has nothing to do with money (except paying the slaughterman his wages) somehow generates tax money which is then siphoned off to ISIS or some such.

Extortion????

Boggles....boggles.

When a fall in Halal exports makes the news in a Buddhist country, we have a problem.

I have seen "halal" bottled water and "halal" prawns at a local Chiang Mai seafood restaurant....

I so agree with you. As always, the noisy minority is the one making the headlines. This halal "fever" is just another way of propagating islam even in countries where they are a minuscule minority, this time by waving money as an incentive. So the recommendation from this muslim specialist is to move the industry to Malaysia? I think they should do it, along with all those who feel they are not treated fairly in this Buddhist country. Islam is a cancer that only stops growing when the host culture is completely engulfed -pun intended.

Halal is propagating Islam???? How do you draw that ludicrous conclusion?

How does a ritualy sanctified meat product "propagate" a religion? Do people eat halal lamb and suddenly convert to Islam?

Ensuring halal products is a simple common sense business practice of ensuring the business captures a section of the market.

So, a few magical words are uttered as the lamb is killed, and it or the slaughterman faces a particular compass direction....and suddenly the meat is tainted?

"Yikes!!!! Don't let my child eat that beef stew, it has had magic words spoken over it!!!!"

Halal food : an excellent indicator of where the Muslim religion belongs IMHO.

Back in the stone age when nobody knew anything and put it all down to a God - who must be kept happy.

You must also have that same attitude to kosher food.....but we mustn't ever bash the Jews for that....Muslims are fair game though, right?

the muslims want Thailand to concentrate more on halal products because of the shrinking export market I wonder what next I suggest they put more into it themselves instead of expecting the government to pull them out of the mire .

Mmmmm, no. I'm pointing out the ridiculousness of fearing eating meat that has had mumbo-jumbo spoken over it.

And in so doing, I'm also pointing out the silliness of suggesting "we should force Muslims to eat pork".

If your religion forbids you to eat halal, I would love to see the scripture that makes that prohibition.

I am afraid you are wrong. It is a form of extortion. You don't just pay for the slaughter man but you pay a fee for every item that bears a halal certification. It is a multi billion business around the world.

I don't care whether its Muslims, Seventh Day Adventists, Jews or Holly Rollers. I don't want any organisation to force me to eat food they require to be blessed their way, processed their way, and to my mind slaughtered cruelly. I have lived mostly in Christian and Buddhist countries. None of them have required I eat food they have blessed. If I am in a Muslim country, OK, that is fair enough. Their country, their rules. Maybe Muslins can adhere to that simple philosophy.

Correct. Forget the veneer of religious smoke and rituals, follow the money trail. Companies pay for the halal certification which is passed on the consumers. Billions are collected worldwide and where does that money go. As a consumer would you support a jihad.

So what you are really saying is that any non-muslims should <deleted> and accept what they demand and muslims shouldn't accept anything at all non-muslims "demand" (which usually never ever happens). And where the hell did you get the idea of "fearing" to eat halal. Are you just making this crap up as you go? As you don't seem to understand i will tell you that it has absolutely nothing to do with fear but everything to do with being forced religious activities. And since when do i have to have a "holy pink unicorns book" to have some kind of saying on if i have to do something or not?

I don't think I have the eloquence to talk reason with someone whose lack of logic and rational progression is astounding.

I'll give it a quick try, but then I give up.....

No, I'm not really saying that...read again, slowly this time.

I am sure I do understand completely...you don't want to eat halal.....because a man said some words while killing the beast.

What I don't understand is how those whispered words affect the meat, in your eyes, your mind, your taste buds.

I mentioned "IF your religion....." (and I assume your reference to the holy pink unicorn book is a response to that) because I can see no other reason to not to want to eat meat that's been mumbled over than yet another fantasy belief that prohibits it. There's no rational reason not to eat it, so it must be irrational.

But you didn't get that, at all.

You may still not get it...as I said...I don't have the eloquence.

Look at the Muslim butcher at the local market in any part of thailand

A dusty halal sign in Arabic thats been hanging there for 20 hears.

I just can't see the connection between that an funding Isis in another country.

Nonsense. "Halal" does not have an international certification authority.....refer to the OP and you would see that. There may be some sort of brand, but it would not be required to be truly halal. The local imam can do it....sure, he may be given a fee, but that's for his pocket, not ISIS. The halal butchers down here in Southern Thailand most certainly would not be paying a single satang to anyone for halal certification. They don't need it, just declaration.

As for cruelty...I can assure you that all export (and most domestic) NZ lamb and mutton is halal and humanely slaughtered. Years in Westfield Freezing works and Auckland Abbatoir can attest to that. I daresay all Australian meat is the same.

Anyone else offended and dismayed by this statement?

Another option, with regard to exports, is to relocate the production base to Thailand's southernmost provinces where a vast majority of the people are Muslims

If one had made the statement that rubber production should be moved out of muslim areas in the south because it would facilitate export of the rubber to markets where muslims were not popular, we would be treated to an uproar.

Nothing like a racist double standard.

You very clearly do not understand what i am saying so it is you who lack the logic here.

What you are saying is following: "Person X shouldn't whine about halal as it doesn't affect their taste buds (where the hell did taste buds come in to this again? Stop making crap up.). Person A only eats halal food and because of this Person X should also be forced to eat halal food.

What i am saying is: "Person X shouldn't have to be forced to eat halal for whatever reason it may be just because Person A eat halal. Just as Person A cannot be forced to eat pork or non-halal because person X eat non-halal".

Do you get it?

If not, here it goes again.

Taste buds has nothing to do with it not wanting to eat halal. Nor fear, nor Batman, nor pink unicorns, nor nothing. It has to do with freedom of religion or lack of religion. No one can be forced into a religious practice against their will. Forcing halal on non-muslims IS FORCING RELIGIOUS PRACTICE ON PEOPLE. Get it?

Man, they're talking about Thailand's halal meat exports to places like the Middle East and Africa !! :)

Basically, Indonesia and Malaysia are boosting their exports, but Thailand's share of the export market is shrinking. Thailand wants to actually keep the halal production in Thailand, because moving the production to Malaysia and Indonesia will mean job loses and less Thai exports.

Right, when I'm in England, I get pissed out of my mind most Friday nights, and I'ill get a kebab on the way home.

I've eaten halal food, and believe me, it's harmless. And no, I'm not slowly converting to Islam. Eating halal food does not cause you to start becoming a Muslim.

This story as many others are just fabricated by the hordes of paranoid racists and islamophobists. There is not one serious media in Sweden reporting on what you take for granted from suspicious websites....

Anyone with average IQ and common sense will not believe in the B.S. you are reporting.

Ah so my child who on her first year was forced halal even though i objected to it wasn't actually forced halal? And if i'm a "racist" for telling the truth about halal in Sweden then i guess i'll make some crap up and call you a paedophile. After all, fair and equal crap throwing should be fair and equal crap throwing... right?

I don't need media to know "stuff" about swedish schools. I can just call (or e-mail) any school in Sweden and tell them that they are required to tell me (by law) who supplies them their food and if it's halal.. and voila, then i know. Google "offentlighetsprincipen" and then learn either swedish, norwegian, latvian or german to understand what it is.

So, with that said i assume you have lower IQ than average and no common sense?

Right, Britain had a ridiculous phase of halal hysteria about a year ago. I hope Thailand never has the same nonsense ! :)

[A giant pizza featured on the front page of The Sun newspaper on Wednesday morning, together with the headline: "Halal secret of Pizza Express." All chicken served in the chain is halal, the paper reported - but customers are not being told, they said.] (quote from the BBC link).

They might make inroads on the Muslim market by branding all their food products halal but there is a growing opposition to halal branded products in western markets so they could win some and lose some.

Halal certification is one of the better con tricks going around at the moment.

This proposed ploy of branding Thai products Made in Patani reminds of the Japanese, when their products were a byword for junk, manufacturing in a town called Usa and of course those products were stamped Made in USA. Maybe Thailand should go the whole hog (yes, it was meant it) and name a food processing region Mecca. That should put a few Saudi riyals into Thai bank accounts.

So, Thailand could become the HUB of all things MECCCA ?

Yes, that'd work!
