SURAT THANI: -- THE MURDER of Surat Thani public prosecutor Phayong Dokmaihom at the weekend was allegedly committed by Niwat Jongsuk, his close aide and gardener, who reportedly confessed to the crime.

However, his motive is still under investigation, said Pol Maj-General Decha Budnampeth, commissioner of Provincial Police Region 8.

Pol Colonel Akkaradej Pimonsri, deputy commander of the Crime Suppression Police, said a relative of Niwat in Phang Nga had contacted police to arrange for the surrender of Niwat, 37. Police picked him up in Lop Buri and brought him to Don Mueang Airport, before flying him to Surat Thani for questioning at Provincial Police Region 8 headquarters.

Phayong, 54, was found dead on Sunday night in his official residence with trauma to the head from a blunt force and cuts to his neck, face and body. His gold accessories worth Bt220,000 were missing.

His pistol, which had been reported as stolen, was on Monday discovered by police concealed in his bed's headboard. The probe, which reportedly will be joined by Crime Suppression Police officers, has considered possible motives, including a personal conflict, theft and that it was a crime of passion.

Also yesterday, Pol Colonel Somkiat Kaewmuk, deputy Surat Thani police chief, told reporters that police had interviewed 10 people, including relatives, colleagues and student interns, most of whom said Phayong was a good and kind person who liked to teach law.

It looks like they weren't so 'close' after all.

It must be sad to realize, in your final moments on Earth, that the person murdering you was someone you trusted and employed. I will never understand Thai mentality that this happens so frequently. Trust no one here.

Motive unclear? Come on! We should congratulate the police for so quickly being able to solve the case and force a confession. It is quite understandable that it might take them a little longer to think up and "find" evidence for a motive.

Despite all the speculation about the sexuality of those involved, and motive, and lost love or no love lost. The confession and the concerns of coercion.

In spite of this we have incontrovertible proof.

The pointing pic - much needed to establish guilt.

Although in Pattaya they might have posed it a bit better, its a little off the cuff for my liking.

In the photo the defendant seems to be explaining something (possibly a sexual perversion), the BIB looks shocked, but his lawyer(?) looks unfazed, probably knows a few prosecutors.
