Hi Chaps,

Could you please advice me on the most speedy, comfortable and wallet friendly way from Chiang Rai to Ko Phi Phi. I have been living in Chiang Rai for a good numbers of years. Time for a holiday me thinks, say five days in all.

Thanks again.

The way I would do it is take a bus to Hua Hin. Spend the night there. Take a bus to Krabi. Ferry from there. You can take a bus from CM to Phuket, but that bus is 22 hours, I took it once and do not recommend it.

More expensive and slower: train CM to Surat Thani (stop in BKK obligatory), sleeper. Bus to Krabi.

flight are sooooo cheap why taking the bus

Easy answer: flying has a carbon footprint that is at least an order of magnitude greater than buses or trains. The the only reason to fly is if you are crossing an ocean.

If you only have five days and take the bus or train, you will have maybe a day at your destination before you have to get back on the bus and head home. I would fly. Lost time and strain on the body has a cost a well, even if it is not “wallet friendly”.

BE ADVISED, Ko Phi Phi is a national park. If you have a white (or pink) skin, when you arrive on the beach of Phi Phi somebody will meet you to collect the 400 baht national park entrance fee. Nobody will tell you about this in Phuket, at the ferry, or anywhere else. It will be a surprise upon arrival. Except now you know, so no surprise.

Personally, as long as this policy remains in effect, I will NEVER go back.

Fly is only realistic option if you have five days and even then it is pushing it as the boat travel takes up a whole day. Keeping checking budget airlines to get a good deal. I have always got great deals withe air Asia, especially if you are flexible with dates. I have been out of the country for a year so not sure if costs are still as good. Love Phi Phi well worth the effort.

Those planes, buses and trains are all making that journey regardless of your personal carbon footprint. If you fly, you can at least avoid losing 2 days of your life packed into an accident waiting to happen and spend 5 minutes on one of those days planting a tree.

As more people, like me, decline to fly, I can assure you that those planes will not be flying.

I have heard the Amish lifestyle is trending these days and soon we will all be walking or riding in horse-drawn carriages. Until that day comes I would recommend enjoying flight while we still have it.

555! This mode of thinking is why we're toast.

How does a person know the guy on the beach is legit? Does he have a uniform or name tag? Will he give a receipt? How will he respond if you take a pic of his face?

If you take a bus, bring earplugs. I also like cloth eye-covers, but they're near impossible to find for sale. I get 'em crafted by a local seamstress.

That is simply not true.

If someone makes an unreasonable proclamation like the only reason to fly is to cross an ocean, then it is only reasonable to rebut that statement with one of the alternative views which exist among the majority.
If you are assured that planes will not be flying because a few people decline to fly, then a humorous response is not uncalled for. I think most people see the humor and don’t see everything through a negative or biased lens.
No one was insulted or called names. No one was blamed for causing problems or told they should leave because they are not good people.
Everything was good natured and polite, and I don’t see how anyone could misconstrue this exchange and turn it into and “Oh my” moment.

Nice dream but not going to happen. Rightly or wrongly people like you are in the minority and always will be. People are getting lazier and more impatient by the day and will almost always choose the quickest easiest option they can afford or that is available to them. Flying is always quicker, is generally easier and nowadays is quite often cheaper but hey, good for you and your fellow carbon footprint carers for at least trying to buck the trend.

So I fly to Krabi or Phuket? Then take a ferry? How come there are so many tourists on Kho Phi Phi, when it takes a whole day to even get there? I honestly didn't know it is so far away.

I guess, I can fly from CR via BKK, but than a full day ride on a ferry, this is hard to belive?

Please let me know how one actually gets to Phi Phi.

Thanks again.

I did not mean a whole day to get there but that it is nearly a whole day there and back if you factor in getting transport to,the ferry, then the 30 mins or so before it departs, unless you are a last minute person. The 90 mins crossing then disembarking and the transport to which ever part of the island you are going to. It is the same with flying, when it is only a 2 HR flight but everyone forgets all the time taken to get there que up etc. as it is monsoon season there may be delays, or as so happens in Thailand they don't care about the safety and go anyway what ever the weather.

If you ask me, nearby Railey beach (Haat Railey) is nicer than Ko Phi Phi, and easier/quicker to get to - from Krabi or Ao Nang beach. Railey is like a small island because it's cut off from the mainland by steep hills, though its a peninsula. Phi Phi also has a dark reputation for farang tourists dying once in a while, and Thai cops having no idea how it happens. Or else they privately know, but don't want to rock the banana boat and anger important people, like is happening on another small island: Ko Tao.

Lanta is also ok, tho I've only been there once. There are other small islands which aren't as well known, in that region, which are probably nicer and safer than Phi Phi.

Phuket to Surat Thani: Two days on the bus or two hours on the plane. Duh, happy to fill your carbon shoes.

I think you have the town names wrong. Do you mean c.mai to surat thani or c.mai to phuket?

Silly me. I meant Udon Thani. I had a ten day window for a trip from Phuket to UT, Khon Khaen, Chumpae, Chiang Mai and back to Phuket. Considered a road trip. Five days driving forth and back plus 20,000 and more baht for gas and lodging or five days on the bus vs two 2 hour flights on the plane. Plane wins hands down. Save time, money and the carbon footprint is divided up by hundreds of passengers in one vehicle. Would have flown from KK to CM (one hour) too but the flights were booked for weeks so had to take the nine hour overnight bus. Plane and bus fares for two about 6K baht.
