Farmers at Pasak Jolasid Dam agree to suspend farming

LOPBURI, 17 July 2015 (NNT) – Farmers living at the tip of Pasak Jonlasid Dam have agreed to suspend their rice farming after the cabinet announced the planned reduction of water supplies from four main dams yesterday.

The water supply from Pasak Jonlasit Dam will be lowered to one million cubic meters per day. The remaining water amounts to 43 million cubic meters or about 4.5 percent of the dam’s capacity. Farmers in nearby areas have decided to postpone their rice farming until the middle of August when the rainy season is expected to arrive.

In Nakhon Nayok province, the current water level of Khun Dan Prakarnchon Dam has dropped to 10.7 million cubic meters or about 4.8 percent of its 224-million cubic meter capacity. The director of Khun Dan Prakarnchon Dam said the newly-adjusted water management should tide people over for another three months, adding that the upcoming rainy season would help people pull through the drought crisis.

Water supplies in the country are mainly derived from four sources: Bhumibol Dam, Sirikit Dam, Pasak Jonlasid Dam and Kwaew Noi Bamrung Dan Dam.
