To change/not change name in passport and UK FLR

Recommended Posts

My wife needs to renew her passport before the FLR application and is questioning changing her name on her passport. She says that it is more time consuming and the passport will then not match her flight booking.

It is very 19th century for a woman to adopt her husband's name but how will UKVI view that when it comes to the FLR application if she retained her maiden name in her passport?

Makes very little difference and should be little more than presenting a marriage certificate to demonstrate a reason for the name change.

Flight bookings are a different matter as airlines seem to be good at charging vast amounts of money to change the smallest details on a ticket. If there are flights booked it is worth asking the airline what is involved before making a decision.

UKVI are not likely to care whether someone has adopted a husbands name or not. The applicant will have to give details on the form anyway. Supplying a copy of a recent marriage certificate should go with the application. No need to change surnames if you don't want too!

Indeed; there is no requirement in either UK or Thai law for a wife to take her husband's surname upon marriage.

When applying for any visa or Leave to Remain UKVI are not interested in whatever name she chooses to use; it is the marriage certificate they want to see.
