DPM Wissanu predicts new government to be formed June-July 2017

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wissanu Krea-ngarm told the cabinet on Tuesday that the next election could be held between March and June in 2017 and a new government could be formed one month afterward.

Deputy government spokesman Maj-Gen Veerachon Sukonthapatipark told the media that Dr Wissanu the timelines of the political roadmap in the aftermath of the rejection of the draft constitution by the National Reform Council on Sunday.

According to Dr Wissanu, the new Constitution Drafting Committee will be formed this month or October and then the committee will take six months to come up with a new draft tentatively expected next April.

Preparations for the referendum and the staging of the referendum will be between next April and August and the next charter is expected to be promulgated in September 2016.

Drafting of the charter-related organic laws will take two months between September-October 2016 after which all the bills will be submitted to the National Legislative Assembly for consideration which will take another three months to complete the job.

The all the bills will be sent to the Constitutional Court for final scrutiny which will take another month. This will be a crucial stage as questions will be raised about the legitimacy and legality of the bills, said Veerachon.

Starting in March 2017, organic bills will be enforced after which election campaign can kick-start with the election expected to take place within March and June.

On would hope that this is a tentative date based on the strength of the new charter. It is imperative that strong checks and balances be integral to the constitution before a govt is formed so as not to give them the ability to abuse it.

I personally am sick of Thailand seeing coup after coup after coup as being the only effective check and balance to keep the government honest and to protect the very majority that were being held in contempt by them (elections as a checks and balance!? don't give em sustainability to keep them poor and then offer 50% above market value always shuts them up)

One can hope this date is realised, but for the sake of the majority that yearn an honest government that listen to them (amnesty anyone?) make sure they do it right this time.

The continous military coups is not the fault of the majority. It is the continous failure of the minority to control the majority

One can only hope that someday the Thai military will honor the soveriengty of the Thai people, defend and protect their constitutional rights and liberties instead of subverting them.

He must have been to see a fortune teller.biggrin.png

The way things are going even as an optimist that time frame just doesn't seem viable. Unless their is a coup on the coup. Unlikely though.

It would seem that even Thailand will be on the same par as Burma and we all know how people hate that. The truth often hurts.

Getting the excuses for even further delays in early. If there are elections before 2018 I'll be genuinely gobsmacked.

You are aware of the fact that the YL government tried to get the amensty bill ratified but failed, and that the Junta succeeded in granting themselves an amnesty, right?

So when you say " (amnesty anyone?)" you are in fact referring to the Junta. I'm happy you have taken time off your trolling to acknowledge this fact!

Until the military's purpose is to serve the elected government, this situation will never resolve. When they eventually have elections in 2020 or whenever the reds will win again. The minority will launch protests for whatever trumped up reason they can decide (maybe the new PM hosted a podcast), the military will then pretend they have to step in to "bring happiness to the people" again. The cycle things are going on right now will eventually lead to a civil war. You can only suppress the majority for so long.

A ridiculous and distorted comparison . A typical redshirt rant. The YL amnesty bill was aimed at getting Taksin and all her other cronies absolved of all the corruption crimes that they had committed. Whereas the army saved the country from the last government which was tearing apart the country and enriching themselves spectacularly. In other words they were doing their job and and incidentally they did have the support of the majority of Thais

I'm all for cleaning up the vote buying, though its never been shown to have any effect on the process, and has been done by both sides. It should absolutely be stopped, but it is the losing sides crutch to justify that they can't win an election (even though they do the same). So using that as a justification is a cop out.

I'll be honest with you, I moved to Thailand during Thaksin's era. Was not a fan of the guy. Having been in the blind to previous history, I thought him being ousted was a good thing. But in time since then we've seen this cycle repeat, and its obvious that the entire system is corrupt. But one thing that the reds have on their side is that they are elected by the people, time and time again. Since that time we've seen two coups, and PMs pressured with constant protests until things reach the boiling point. We've seen the military pretend to be against both parties, when it's obvious that Suthep is in bed with them. You could read that in braille. And it's obvious to everyone that they did not want elections. Why? Because they knew they would lose. Blocking voting booths and then ousting a government on the basis of that? We'll be looking at years of this illegal coup before there is an election, and they'll stretch it out as long as they can. Several years back they were trying to rig the elections so they could win with the ridiculous college education rule. They've given up on winning them entirely at this point and are looking for ways to stay in power without them.

In which case why did the army not ensure that the elections were held as required by the constitution?

As they "have the support of the majority of Thais" then the faction they serve would have won, and they could be now basking in the thanks of a grateful nation!

Or could it perhaps be you who has the ridiculous and distorted view of events? Could it even be a typical Junta Fan rant? Perish the thought!

Let's not be kidding ourselves. There will be no election in any meaningful way. The only way that they, or more accurately their backers, can ensure the government they desire through election, would be by disenfranchising huge swathes of the country, both geographically and socially.

They will only leave power when they are forced out. The days of intervention by a higher authority are over.

Actually it's you that's full of BS as, with one exception, all governments since 2001 did not receive the majority of votes. They got more votes than other parties which is partly due to total control over the voters in Isan via their paid provincial, district & village headmen and the not very democratic first past the post voting system.

No it's not in their job description to overthrow a government but when a totally corrupt police are bought by a government & allow law and order to break down, they do feel that they are the only ones left to bring back some semblance of security for Thai citizens. It's not ideal but is a sort of circuit breaker that, unfortunately, the political system doesn't allow.

Oh Buddha, how many times do we have to read the same mindless drivel from the same bunch of sycophants? The fact that PTP won every time is just due to the uneducated and paid Isaan voters?

Really - could you be more simplistic??

The army brings back some semblance of security? Yes, that's magnanimous of them after having their lap dog Suthep stir the pot!bah.gif

If mindless drivel had a got talent competition - you're a clear winner.

I see you are adding to the uneducated voters crap as I didn't mention it and never have. One doesn't have to be uneducated to be 'persuaded' to vote in a certain way and you seem completely ignorant of how Thaksin came to power.

Ah I see - it was all a conspiracy, which the keyboard eggspurts love to use as a straw man so it can be 'legitimately' shot down. I don't post very often but sometimes the sheer repetition of PTP/Red shirt propaganda needs an answer.

Can you provide us with absolute and clear proof that money was physically given to people for them to vote. Either way is fine too seeing as both parties have been accused it.

And no "my wife's cousin's friend's neighbor said they got 500 baht" poppycock. Clear and undeniable proof please.

Your answer about Thaksin's MO in coming to power is, in your own word, simplistic.

Twice you've been sadly mistaken - the 'majority' and a false accusation of using 'uneducated' but, just like those you hate, refuse to admit you're wrong.

I don't think you realise the meaning of your last sentence - which was precisely what I said. Anyway, that's it for me. I always enjoy a little skirmish with propagandists. The last utterance is yours - try and make it credible.

One can only hope that someday the police and judicial system will be professional, impartial and uphold and apply the law fairly to all Thai citizens regardless of wealth, family, connections and status.

One can only hope that someday lying, cheating, thieving immoral corrupt politicians will be prosecuted, and if convicted put behind bars where they belong.
