3 nights in bkk

Featured Replies

Hi

I have my parents coming to visit my family in thailand (thai wife & 2 yr old daughter) they are both in their 60s

Looking for recommendations for things to do in bkk for 3 days, was thinking of the royal palace but not sure what else

Thanks in advance for help

Maybe go for a drink at one of those rooftop bars such as Lebua State Tower one evening. Great views of the city.

River boat trip.

Aquarium in Siam Paragon,

Jim Thompson House,

National Museum, or other ones,

Wat Arun. Can also take some nice sunset photos of the Wat from Rattanakosin Island. Several small riverside hotels have rooftop bars or restaurants from where one can take photos. (See Arun Residence.)

Floating Market

I hate to start off with this, but best to be prepared. If you live here, you might be aware of these. But just in case:

The river boat is a tough one also. Lots of scams around this. I saw a piece on Thai TV about locals being ripped. Of course the police are in on it. Might be best to have your hotel help set this up for you. Unless you really know what you are doing.

Jim Thompson is fantastic. Royal Palace is a must as is the nearby Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Damnoen Saduak floating market is a tourist trap and I couldn't wait to get out of there fast enough. Maybe try one of the smaller floating markets?

Pretty good also:

Where will they be staying???? Will your family be with them?

I'm in my 60's .....

First thing I like is a NICE hotel....have them spend a few dollars more to stay at a 5 star hotel (makes the whole experience of being in Thailand fantastic) For about $100/night they can stay at either Grande Centre Pointe Terminal 21, Centara Grand at Centerpoint, or Lebua State Towers (lebua and Grande Centre both have sky bars and Grande center and Centara Grand all have great shopping in the hotel (hotels are in a skyscraper with malls below on the lower levels)

Next....Take them to a fantastic restaurant....Nahm comes to mind ...rated #22 out of 50 of the top restaurants in the world! Its in the Metropolitan Hotel ...27 S. Sathorn

Other than that ...the other suggestions for day tripping sounds good ....maybe even go to the "Weekend Market" Chatuchak

Depending on how fit they are, there are also quite a few companies doing half day bicycle tours.

Dangerous and unhealthy

When my family came their favorite tour was when we engaged one of the Longtail boats on the Chao Phraya: we negotiated B2000 for 90 minutes, 4 people, no other passengers. Near the start of the tour, we had to wait close to 30 minutes to go through one of the river locks to access the back klongs. The driver did not include that waiting time in our 90 minutes.

The back klongs are really a window into the old Bangkok and it was certainly worth the money. The driver was polite and considerate.

Also, they really enjoyed a Chao Phraya dinner cruise. The food actually wasn't that great but the cruise down the river and back at night was really memorable.
