webfact
Mujigae brings more water but still short of predictionBANGKOK: -- Mujigae has brought additional water to the country’s four main dams but the amount of water has fallen short of anticipation, said Mr Thongplaew Kongchan, director of the Office of Water Management and Hydrology of Irrigation Department, on Tuesday. He disclosed that it was earlier predicted that the storm would bring more rains which would add another 300 million cubic metre of water into Bhumibol, Sirikit, Kwae Noi Bamrungdaen and Pasak Cholasit dams. However, the storm shifted direction and brought less rains, about 15-30 percent less than forecast. The four dams have altogether 3,182 million cubic metres of water which can be used – still short of demand and insufficient to meet the need of water for the farming sector. The Irrigation Department has been campaigning to urge rice farmers to stop second-crop cultivation due to expected serious water shortage in the upcoming dry season. However, several farmers in Nakhon Sawan have defied the warning but have resorted to a new cultivation technique which can reduce water consumption by about 30 percent.According to the Rice Department, the technique known as the wet-and-dry cultivation can increase productivity but, at the same time, reduce water consumption which can cut cost by about 1,000 baht per rai.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/mujigae-brings-more-water-but-still-short-of-prediction -- Thai PBS 2015-10-
