BANGKOK: -- Southern sky this morning became clearer today with rains in many areas help to improve the air quality down significantly from over 200 milligrammes per cubic metre of dust particles yesterday to less than 100 mcg.

The maximum safety standard of dust article is at 120 mcg but today’s measurement of PM10 level is 73 mcg in Hat Yai, against over 350 mcg two days ago.

Visibility at Hat Yai international airport was over 2,000 metres this morning, thus posing no problem for aircraft landing and takeoff this morning.

Unlike yesterday, haze has scared away tourists and shoppers at Hat Yai’s Talad Kim Yong main shopping market with vendors and traders reporting bad business with no tourists coming as usual although it was a public holiday yesterday.

In other southern provinces, dust particles also dropped but still above the 120 cmg safety level.

Average level measured during the past 24 hours was at 167 mcg.

But meteorological Department officials said rainfalls in many southern areas last night and today have greatly eased the haze situation, with prediction the situation will gradually improve.

Changing wind directions also help to miniumize the situation with the strenghthening of the southeasterly wind from high pressure system moving down from China.

Local authorities in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Phatthalung, Satun, Trang, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, continued to distribute dust masks to residents and advise to avoid outdoor activities.

But they hoped improved situation in one or two days.
