BANGKOK: Ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra appeared at the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions this morning for examination of evidence brought to indict her for negligence of duty in the rice pledging scheme that resulted in loss of over 500 billion baht to the state.

The evidence was gathered by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and submitted to the Office of the Attorney-General to convict her in the Supreme Court.

Ms Yingluck arrived at 8.40 am as appointed by the Court to allow her examine the evidence. She was greeted by hundreds of supporters coming to give her morale support.

The supporters, mostly women, gave her large bunch of roses and orchids and shouted “Yingluck Soo Soo” (fight on).
Yingluck thanked her supporters and assured them she could defend her innocence.

She told reporters that she also had prepared more than 60 witnesses to testify in court and trusted that the court would allow them to speak as her evidence are credible.

She said her witnesses comprise two groups, the first being witnesses whose names had already been submitted to the NACC, and the second group whose names were rejected by the NACC.

She said she was hopeful that thus group of witnesses will be accepted by the Court to testify.

Yep... and they each revived 500 baht to show up cheer and applauds... easy money....

Which doesn't quite cover the 850 baht that every Thai citizen lost as the result of her malfeasance in administering the rice pledge scheme. A scheme which only put 2% of the indebtedness into the pockets of the rice farmers.

Too bad they will never prosecute the rice millers, the rice smugglers and the warehouse operators who stole all the money from the citizens of Thailand. Just more bought votes for the PTP.

"the rice millers, the rice smugglers and the warehouse operators who stole all the money" Exactly right and so it is clear she stole nothing. The businesses you mention tend be owned by chinese families who are certainly nothing to do with the so called Reds!

You just know that Pan-O was stomping his feet and grinding his teeth in fury and anger at seeing this.

Really?

How do you know that, or is it just another little dream of yours?

Did you personally see it happening or is there a link for the rest of us mortals to look at.

If it "Happened on your watch", you are responsible. The smart thing is to provide a list of those who took advantage of the situation !!

Even if it including a certain "Dubai Dude" !!

This goes far beyond this simply happening on her watch. This was her populist policy to help get elected. She was heading up this whole program. She regected multiple assertions by others that the system was rampant with corruption.

She allowed the phony G2G deals to be done.

She and her cronies profited from this either directly or indirectly.

I hope she gets what coming to her, but I am not holding my breath.

That's correct, there's no evidence she stole anything. However, her negligence and malfeasance resulted in losses which were not part of the legislation that was enacted by Parliament. There was never a vote to appropriate 600 billion baht for the program. Instead, she had a duty to report on the financials, monitor the losses, and to manage and provide overall supervision for the program so that it ran within the confines of the enabling legislation.

Yingluck's abysmal failure to perform her duties as set forth in the legislation is the basis of the claims against her for the loss of 600 billion baht. This rendered the act unconstitutional, and is the basis for prosecuting, civilly and criminally, Yingluck for malfeasance.

And the persons who profited. You might be correct that some may have some ethnic Chinese blood, but they are Thai. The same Thai-Chinese who populate Chiang Mai and continue to support PTP. To claim they aren't red is naive. They might not be UDD militants, but they are firmly in the camp of the PTP.

But surely studies have shown that all business in Thailand is accompanied by corruption and the only way to defeat corruption is to imitate Pol Pot and make money illegal, is this what you propose? Corruption prospers here because it is deeply rooted in Thai / Siamese culture and tradition, maybe very hard to stop without doing a Pol Pot.

'Hundreds' is more than 200 anyway, but how many 'hundreds' would have been there this morning, isn't there a general picture of the gathering, for us to count heads, and was it 2 or 4 under an umbrella again? How many chartered buses, how many lunchboxes handed out? Are it maybe the same calculators used at the last red 'mass gathering', well the last one with really a lot of people, at both sides of a klong I remember, where there was a little 'zero' too much creeping in the announced number...

We’re told she was greeted by hundreds of supporters coming to give her morale support. There’s even a photograph that can be used as evidence.

Some of these people even had flowers to give her (just like Preecha Kaewbanpaew, the 77-year-old retired schoolteacher arrested on sedition charges recently).

Surely this is also a political statement, ergo all these people need to be herded up, charged with sedition too, and accommodated at the temporary prison at the 11th army circle just like Pol Maj Prakrom Warunprapa was before his death?

Regardless what one thinks about Yingluck, the fact that she still has supporters after 17 months of junta-style peace and happiness makes one question whether reconciliation efforts have done anything to repair this fractured country.

Just wait until she is found guilty!

This whole charade by YS is cynical, hypocritical and fairly typical of her time in office, to now say that she fulfilled her duties and was operating in good faith beggars belief.

Only the most indoctrinated and naive would believe her well rehearsed protestations, they sound as hollow as the promises her party made before being elected.

They justify their rape of the Thai economy with the firm belief that this is their birth right, their natural superiority within the Thai social structure grants them their high position and privileges, the common man is here to provide them with what they need and require. The common man's position in this country is right where it should be, they had years to enact improvements and to improve the lives of those who voted for them, what did they actually achieve?

Only when the general level of education in this country is improved, only when the general population has a better understanding of how the financial elite hold them in total contempt, only then will clans like the Shins and their cohorts lose their privileged position...

There was a time....long, long ago...before the farmers and the poor were ripped off with T's Rice Scam....when this headline would not have read ".....amid hundreds of supporters" but "thousands".

Best move over Mr T - l'il sis needs a small palace near a shopping mall in Doobs.

As far as I know there is no law against being gullible, so these people should be safe.

If they are genuine followers it is their right to show up and show their support. It will not be classed as a political protest either because Yingluck's political career is over.

I would guess if these supporters are for real they are not the ones who were badly affected by the rice scam.

Or maybe they are rent-a-crowd. whistling.gif

And the Shins still get the news and a crowd in the heart of the opposition.

Yingluck did not run away even when given the chance, must be quite galling for the ptb.

Thaksin is a mastermind of propoganda. Red Sunday, genius. Can he make a comeback after being on the ropes so long? One thing that you can say is that he doesn't go down easy. The very man to drive him down, Prayut is now the man who's weakness is being exploited by Thaksin. If Thaksin was the popular PM then Prayut is the unpopular PM. So what can be done to save the nation from a Thaksin comeback? A new PM. The unpopular one is bringing us all back to square one again.

We have two candidates in the US running for President who advocate taking taxpayer money to get those with student loans out of trouble. Is that a populist policy? Every nation is faced with those politicians in government who promote populist policies for getting votes to the politicians own benefit. This case is no different. If the current Thai government was interested in criminally prosecuting even some of the profiteers from this scheme they could have done so. This is nothing but political staging on the part of the non elected military government who buys blimps, aircraft carriers, and wants to buy submarines. Talk about malfeasance!

malfeasance means she accepted money or other material gain to provide a bad service and you have already accepted that she did not gain personally so your accusation is groundless. You cannot hold the prime minister criminally responsible for not being able to fully impliment a policy and holding her responsible for others misdeeds. That is just plain ridiculous. What we are witnessing is a witch hunt and if you can't see that then your politics are blinding you.

You must be referring to the democrats/Bangkok elite who had years in control but never considered providing free health care, empowering the poor politically or helping them financially until Taksin did so.

By gum, the junta groupies are spitting some venom today. Still, it gets it out of their system, bless 'em.

Is that the best you can think up?

You should study those who post of her poise, dignity, elegance, calmness; not mention repeating you was the country's first female PM and the really delusional she was a good PM!
