RANONG: -- TWO MYANMAR HUMAN trafficking suspects, who allegedly lured their compatriots for hard labour on fishing trawlers in Indonesian waters, were yesterday handed over to the Myanmar authority.

The two suspects - identified as a Myanmar woman Nuay and a Myanmar man Chi - were handed over to the Myanmar anti-human trafficking police team led by Captain U Meng Khine yesterday at the Thai-Myanmar Border Cooperation on Anti-Trafficking in Persons (BCATIP).

The two suspects, who ran a restaurant in Ranong as a cover-up business, were wanted by Myanmar authorities, which then requested their Thai counterparts to locate and arrest them.

Many Myanmar workers who were recently sent back from Indonesia had told the authorities that the Myanmar agents and their Thai accomplices had lured them with a faulty promise of well-paid jobs in Thailand.

After they arrived in Thailand, they were sent to do hard labour on fishing trawlers in Indonesian waters, where they also were coerced and assaulted until they managed to flee.

Thai national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda instructed Ranong Immigration Police chief Pol Colonel Supareuk Pankosol and Pol Major Jatuporn Arunreukthawil from the Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression Division 2 to lead the investigation team until the two suspects were arrested.
