A colleague of mine will do a trip to Laos soon to convert his tourist visa to a non B. In view of the time involved to secure all the paperwork he won't be able to go until the evening of the 18th of November. He will then cross into Laos the morning of the 19th. My question is the stamp in his passport shows his tourist stay until the 18th November. If he enters Laos on the 19th will he incur 1 day overstay and incur a fee and problems? Or does the stamp mean he can stay in Thailand until the 18th and then he has to renew or leave the country?

If he leaves after midnight on the 18th he will have a 1 day overstay on exit. One day overstay is often not charged but if it is it will be 500 baht.

500 Bht and no one will be concerned about a one day overstay. The fine is the only penalty.

The waiver for the fine for a one day overstay is only done at the airports in Bangkok. Never at a border crossing.

No . Straight forward, fill out some forms, have your photo taken, pay the fine and be on your way

The problem concerns the overstay stamp that is now permanently displayed in the passport.

When the passport holder goes to extend or obtain a new visa that little black stamp is seen and that can or could and or sometimes causes the problem as the immigration authorities inside the country or when dealing with air port or land border point immigration officials, when entering the country, or when applying at a consulate or embassy may take note of that little black overstay stamp and deny you.

For one day they may even waive you through...but most likely not because...well..... 500 baht is 500 baht.... right?......while they may not stamp your passport and I would bet 500 Baht if you say: "Pretty please, do not include the little black stamp in the passport" the male immigration officer or the Thai women immigration officer may just smile and hand you back your passport with NO stamp ....like that...... and then you have one less possible future problem with immigration issues.

But many days or weeks and months etc etc....you will pay the fine and surely have the little black overstay stamp in your passport and then you can have a problem in the future because of overstay in the past.

The existence of an overstay stamp in a passport has no deleterious effect on obtaining Thai visas or extensions of stay.
