National artist Suchart passes away at 77

BANGKOK: National artist Suchart Sapsin, the founder of a shadow puppet folk museum, died Saturday morning at age 77. Relatives said he died peacefully of old age, and his funeral rites would be held at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Born on July 2, 1938, Suchart had played a key role in the conservation of nang talung - shadow puppetry. His troupe stuck strictly to tradition and did not use foreign musical instruments in its performances.

Suchart was named a national artist in 2006.

Not exactly too interested in the arts it seems these Thai visa posters........sad to hear of another Thai national artist passing away,

However, the visual arts in this country are in great shape, the contemporary Thai artists are currently producing a large body of work that is original and breat taking, incredible talent is here. Buy in now......it's horribly undervalued and when the rest of the world catches on things will change dramatically....Thawan Duchanee has broken through into the international art market and now the late artists works sell at Christies and sothebys Hong Kong. The first of many to come

That there is a lot of talent is evident even from the student shows on view at time to time at places like river city. While there are one or two galleries showing work, they are not well known, are not promoted.

Thailand has great talent in creative arts but misses opportunities to develop industries based on the talent.

Vietnam is a classic case...in fine art and in textile design...of realised potential
