Top Kurdish lawyer Tahir Elci shot dead in Turkey

A top Kurdish lawyer was killed by an unidentified gunman on Saturday amid chaotic scenes in Turkey.

Some reports suggest that Tahir Elci was caught in the crossfire as attackers shot at security forces in Diyarbakir, the largest city in the troubled, mainly Kurdish southeast of the country.

But other sources say that Elci, the head of Diyarbakir’s Bar Association, was deliberately shot in the head after making a statement to the media. A policeman was also killed in the gunfire.

Elci was facing trial in Turkey for saying that the banned Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK was not a terrorist organisation.

Erdogan is a brutal dictator suppressing the freedom of speech in Turkey!

Erdogan is even more evil than Assad.

Erdogan is so arrogant and self assured that NATO will always protect him?

I agree that "Erdogan is a brutal dictator suppressing the freedom of speech in Turkey".

But I don't quite agree that "Erdogan is even more evil than Assad".

And yes, Erdogan is very arrogant and self assured political leader.

Now he has made a very big mistake by shooting down a Russian military air plane.

The consequences of this mistake may be catastrophic for the World.

It's high time to reconsider Turkey's membership in NATO.

Turkey is casting a shadow on NATO's reputation in the World.

Erdogan was always a closet Islamist dictator. He is moving Turkey away from being a secular democracy to being an Islamic Dictatorship. Turkey as allowed the passage of fighters and weapons across it's border to ISIS and buys oil from ISIS, something that his son is heavily involved with. Kurds and Armenians have been persecuted for years and years and journalists and opponents of the government are denied free speech, arrested, hounded and assassinated. Erdogan does nothing to stop the flow of illegal Muslin migrants, mainly comprising aggressive single young males into Europe.

This lunatic has delusions of rebuilding the Ottoman Empire and is no enemy of ISIS.

How exactly is Assad worse?

Try leading a country in middle east. It's not easy. It's the most fuked up area in the world. I can't believe people are pinning the death of this lawyer on Erdogan, why would he want to get rid of a prominent lawyer just after having a landslide electoral victory?

Erdogan is the last person that would want something like this to happen especially after the incident with Russia.

He might be autocratic but he doesn't qualify as being a dictator, he came to power via elections. Ataturk however was indeed a dictator because during his era elections weren't held. It was a single party state. You could however argue that democracy has no place in middle east, that might be a valid point.
