Drought conditions continue to affect northeast

BANGKOK: -- The Lamtakong Operation and Maintenance Project has reduced its release of water to maintain reserves while Pichit provincial authorities have handed out a new local strain of limes to aid rice farmers during the dry season.

Pichit province officials have passed out 500 saplings of the Pichit 1 lime to rice farmers and encouraged them to farm the new locally created strain in the place of their main crop during this dry season. The limes take only eight months to reach maturity and sell for three baht per fruit at market, providing a suitable alternative to rice.

Meanwhile, Lamtakong Operation and Maintenance Project authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima have disclosed that recent rains have helped to boost water reserves. However, the project has decided to reduce its output from 3 square meters per second to 1 to make sure the reserve remains at target levels moving into the dry season.
