webfact
Haiti's president steps down with no replacementPort-au-Prince: -- Haiti’s President Michel Martelly has left office but with nobody to replace him due to last month’s run-off election having been scrapped over alleged vote-rigging.An agreement was reached less than 24-hours before Martelly stepped down under which parliament will elect an interim president until fresh elections in April. On leaving Martelly said that he had told the the president of the Senate, deputies, and various political leaders that he would not hand over the country to anyone who doesn’t believe in elections. But that he had been reassured that he could go calmly as every thing would be done to ensure the country is stable.Widespread unrest set off by suspicions of electoral fraud has dozens injured in the impoverished Caribbean nation.Haiti last created a transitional government in 2004. It lasted two years, and took power in the days after President Jean Bertrand-Aristide was ousted by a rebellion and a U.N. peacekeeping force came to stabilise the country. -- (c) Copyright Euronews 2016-02-
