An overloaded truck last week left potholes in Tsubasa Bridge and in the reputation of the Transportation Ministry. The incident has sparked accusations of longstanding inefficiency and graft in the Ministry from both the Prime Minister and the opposition party. Prime Minister Hun Sen criticized Minister of Transportation Tram Iv Tek at an annual meeting of the Interior Ministry last week, saying his ministry “seems to not function at all.” He singled out the Ministry of Transportation as the “most inefficient” government ministry, criticizing the slowness of its response to the damage to the bridge.

The opposition party, in a rare moment of agreement with Mr. Hun Sen, also criticized the Transportation Ministry’s failure to regulate overloaded trucks. “What’s going on with the Transportation Ministry?” asked Son Chhay, a lawmaker for the Cambodia National Rescue Party. “How can they allow overloaded trucks to freely cross bridges or roads?”
