Three Charged Over Murder of Army ‘Agent’

Featured Replies

Khmer Times / Mom Kunthear

Three men were charged with premeditated murder by the Battambang Provincial Court yesterday and sent to the provincial prison while police continued to search for two more suspects over the grisly murder last Thursday of an “agent” investigating illegal fishing in the Tonle Sap Lake.

Lon Sokhea, 47, had been working for the military to investigate a group of men suspected of fishing illegally in Cambodia’s largest lake, Ek Phnom district deputy police chief Chorng Sophorn said. He stressed that Mr. Sokhea was not a military officer but had an informal relationship with the army, referring to him as an “agent.”

Police said he had tried to extort money from the suspects in exchange for not reporting that they had been allegedly fishing illegally. Mr. Sokhea was drinking with the five men at the time. An argument escalated into an attack and he was beaten with a club and then killed with an axe, police said.
