I have a usual host for some sites.. Very happy with them and very cheap for what I need. Couple of USD per month gives me a few GB traffic and multiple MySQL etc with cPanel.

Need a php5 webhost and as this is an info site with no return expected dont want another monthly or annual cost thats too high.

Anyone know a good cheap php5 host ??

3 - 5GB per month enough

http://www.3ix.org (1 US Dollar a month) offers PHP 4.3.2 and with the cheapest option you get access to two MySQL databases.

I use extended PHP programming on 3 of my websites I host including the use of several MySQL databases. Can you specify why you want PHP 5, as I hardly she a today advantage with current browsers.

If you want a test solution, you better of with creating your own home network and hosting a website on a local IP address. I test new my website new PHP 5 codes on a local IP address running Fedora Linux, with the HTTP server I want (Apache currently).

Currently I found that I need to generate XML files some additional packages installed on the server, PHP is amazing ...but just having PHP 5 installed on the server is probably not enough

php5 is a MAJOR improvement for the OOP (Object Oriented Programmation).

Such as :

better constructor (clear syntax).

A destructor.

For the 'old' school of programming, php5 have improved mostly all the existing function by adding one or several optional parameters. Right now, coding that used 30 lines can be made in 15 lines with a gain in ressources.

Maybe a look at online documentation would be profitable if you use php (anyway you should always refer to the online doc as soon as you touch php, it will allow you to maximse your coding).

On the other hand 1$/month is a good deal, 4.3 .x is stable, and what I said earlier will apply only if you use a lot of OOP coming from Java , or if really you need to be top of the art (let say the ressources optimisation can be visible for slashdot.com, but for a site that have less than 1000 visitors per hour, it give nothing).

I would stay away from cheap hosting providers as it is not economic for them to provide a reliable service for such low rates, and they rely on volume to turn any profit. Many of these providers overload their servers, use single drive technology for storage, have no RAID redundancy in place and often do not perform backups on a regular basis. Not to mention, many servers have not been properly hardened or patched for vunerabilities, or the company is run by inexperienced staff who do not have the knowledge to properly manage servers.

The other issue with many small hosts is that they cannot afford the resources to provide responsive customer support, and many of these companies are run on a part-time or semi part-time basis by a single person.

Even if you are on a budget, you can still find a reliable host which does not suffer from the above-mentioned problems for a reasonable monthly rate.

Getting back to your original requirements, PHP5 hosting is available from many providers in the US. Google is your friend.

Well my current preffered host is 15 USD for 6 months.. Great support, cpanel unlimeted SQL unlimeted emails etc..

Its everything I need for small sites.

I have some 'free' accounts with 1and1 that would cost a lot to use and they are a much worse host IMHO.

I need PHP5 for mediawiki.. Found a wiki specialised service for 5 USD per month.. Seems to have enough features..

Getting to the stage where I should have my own box and host everything myself.
