Commercial registrations will exceed 60,000 this year

BANGKOK: The Department of Business Development (DBD) remains confident that business registration this year will meet its speculated target of 60,000-65,000 new firms despite of the economic slowdown.

The department’s director-general Ms Pongpan Geaviriyapun was confident of the targeted figures would be realised although applications for commercial registrations in February showed a 0.6 percent decline year on year.

She said the DBD received a total of 5,598 applications for businesses registration last month, down by 0.6 percent from the same period a year earlier.

The number of applications declined 3 percent from January 2016.

She attributed the decline in the application to fewer working days in February when application could be submitted.

She said most applications came from building constructions and real estate businesses, numbering 699 and 284 respectively.

But she also said a total of 922 businesses officially closed down last month, most of which was lottery business, numbering 149 or 16 percent.

However she is confident the number of new commercial registrations this year should exceed the last year figures to reach 60,000-65,000 as targeted.

The number of new business registration will correspond with the economy which is forecast to grow 2.8-3.8 percent this year, she added.

These firms might be in the tourist sector going by the record arrival rates.

The rate of business formation is essentially the same as last year. This is consistent with the macro growth figures.

Perhaps tourism is the bright spot. But reporting by TAT on revenue from tourism is significantly less frequent than their much touted arrivals numbers. It's difficult to judge when the government provides so little information, and the media is passive.

Driving around I'm amazed at the number of closed down shops. Closed, with for sale/rent signs out front. But still building more shop houses!

Could be many of these small businesses don't register their business???

I live in Buriram. Which is often considered to be the rectum of Thailand. I assure you KhonKaen is further up!
