Hun Manet to Pass on New Year Celebrations in Long Beach

Prime Minister Hun Sen’s eldest son Hun Manet said in a Facebook post yesterday that he will not take part in the Khmer New Year cultural parade in Long Beach, California, to avoid “civil unrest” and violence in the community.

Touch Vibol, the president of the Cambodian-American Alliance and organizer of last month’s protests against the prime minister’s attendance at the US-ASEAN summit, and prominent Khmer-American opposition supporter Brady Nuy Young, were cited by General Manet as the organizers of the Long Beach protests against him.

Gen. Manet was invited by the Cambodian Town Committee in California to attend the New Year parade on April 10, which the Cambodian armed forces commander had earlier said would “promote Cambodian culture and national honor.”

“I had decided to accept the invitation of the Town Committee in order to show my total support for the good will of the committee, which wants to see Cambodians reunite without the discrimination of place – the USA, Cambodia or any in country – political trend or religion with a view to promote Cambodian national honor in the international arena on that special occasion,” Gen. Manet wrote.
