Anti-smoking groups call for updated amendments to tobacco control laws

BANGKOK, 6 April 2016 (NNT) - Anti-smoking groups have collected over 15 million signatures across the country to push for new legislation to prevent children from smoking.

Heads of the National Alliance for Tobacco Free Thailand, Moh Anamai Network, Youth Network of Bangkok and the Friend of Women Foundation delivered a joint press conference on the successful collection of signatures to push for the Cabinet’s proposal of a new tobacco control law to be submitted to the National Legislative Assembly.

The proposed law will amend the definition of "tobacco products" to include any new tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and shisha pipes, while the definition of tobacco advertising will cover new mediums such as the use of presenters. The new law will also ban the publication of any social service activities by tobacco companies.

Sounds fair enough.

Although the government will probably see it as a good excuse to put prices up.

smoking children? I do sea children driving motobikes without helmets everywhere though.

But not many kids here smoke i must say.

There is a 2,000 baht fine for smoking in a public setting (e.g. restaurant, bus station, etc.) So far they have collected 0 baht in fines. Does anyone think that's because the entire population has obeyed the law? How about enforcing the present smoking laws.?

Which would be about the same as the amount collected in the UK---(and probably other countries also) you don't get prosecuted in the UK you just get told to put it out.

In Fact the UK police now have gone one step further than the Thai police.....they will not even enforce the new anti smoking laws that came in last year re smoking in cars with children.

(UK) Police will turn 'blind eye' to new smoking ban in cars From 1st October it will be illegal for a motorist to smoke with someone under the age of 18 in their car, but few if any drivers are expected to be prosecuted--Motorists who flout a new law which bans smoking in cars while children are inside are unlikely to be prosecuted or fined, after the police signalled they would turn a blind eye.

I can just imagine jaltsc---(& the other Thai haters ranting, if this (turn a blind eye) would have been said by the BIB....... but I guess we can let it pass for the good old English Bobby........now lets get back to kicking the Thai's around......coffee1.gif

Absolutely. I haven't smoked for 15 years, and I now dislike being around smoking intensely (there is nothing like the zeal of a reformed tart).

I have a favourite bar where I occasionally go to discuss the higher philosophical points of life in Northern Thailand with the young ladies who work there. Nothing annoys me ( or the bar staff ) more than people who light up right next to you.

I recently asked a chap ( a delightful fellow of teutonic extraction I believe ) not to blow smoke over me. His colourful reply alleged that I had had intimate relations with my mother and that the person who I was talking with was a prostitute. Incidentally both allegations were untrue.

As so often here, no need for new laws, just enforce the existing ones, perhaps staring with this creature?

Smoke if you want to, but don't inflict it on those of us who don't.
