Powder Inhalers For Asthma

Featured Replies

I use Serotide inhalers for my asthma. Having recently come back to Thailand I have brought some with me. It has been mentioned on the forum before about keeping medicine in the fridge to keep its strength but with the powder, if it becomes damp it will be unusable. We dont keep the aircon on at home all the time. Any other suggestions?

Also i have previously bought the inhalers in Bangkok at a pharmacy near where i used to live but it was a higher dose than i normally used. I cut down the number of times i took it to accomodate. Can anyone tell me if i will have any problems if my parents send over the inhalers, bought on prescription in the UK?

Any advise welcome

I don’t know that you would need to keep a powder cold, but if you do you may want to think about those little moisture absorbing packets. Place the powder and the packets in a sealed plastic container. Don’t ask where to get them because I have not a clue about that.

I use a powder inhaler here in Thailand, Pulmicort. I have no problems with it not working correctly. I keep it in a room which is air-conditioned most of the time. In fact, that particular room is kept cool *because* it's where meds -and computers- are kept. I wouldn't recommend the refrigerator at all, as most medicine is supposed to be kept between about 65 and 80 degrees (about 19 and 26 Celsius).

Have either of you come across the Buteyko Method as a way for addressing asthma symptoms?

I used an inhaler more than a few times a day regularly for 30-odd years before discovering this. After practising the technique I used my Ventolin two more times, the last being over two years ago. I weaned off the Becotide over 6 months.

It may not change everyone's lives, as it did mine, but I am quite evangelical about it because it has the potential of making a huge difference to the lives of asthma sufferers.

I can give you more info if you want, but there is much on the 'net.

Thanks for the advice, markwhite, i have seen adverts in uk but not looked into it. My asthma actually seems a bit better here than in uk and i have to use seretide twice a day, which is like a mix of ventolin and becotide. I will do a search on it. Thanks

My mum used to send my inhalers over from the UK and we never had any issues with them being sent, this is what you mean right?

I will do a search on it. Thanks

Drop me a PM if you have any questions you don't find the answers to. I'm quite happy to send instructions on the method by email based on the training the gave on the course I went on.

Have anyone found Bricanyl (terbutaline sulphate) inhaler OTC or with subscriptions here in Thailand?

I just cannot find it and my last one is running out today...

Bricanyl used to be available in Thailand but is no longer on the list of approved drugs, I don't know why, and there are no other bransds od tervbutaline inhaler here. Terbutaline is available in tablet form, and you can get salbutamol inhalers, which is in the same family of drugs (Beta 2 agonist).

I suggest you consult with your physician about the possibility of switching to a salbutamol inhaler. Brand names for that include:

Aeromol

Buto-Asma

Buventol

Salbutamol Inhalation

Salvent

Venterol

Ventolin

As I was in a very severe time-pressure I dashed down to South East Pharmacy (tel: 02 252-8241) and picked up a Ventolin. It takes me back in time, this was something I used as a kid...and disliked strongly. As Sheryl accurately noted, Bricanyl was not available. So I will have to use the Ventolin as some backup before I can get a doctors-appointment at some time in Europe, so I can get more of the Bricanyl.

Thanks for the tips and info.

I do get my inhalers sent from the UK along with my other prescription drugs. Usually by DHL or similar. No preblems receiving them. Though they are not listed as drugs :)
