BKK Post calling this years road fatalities "The Songkran Highway Slaughter." Deaths up a staggering 30% over last year topping out at 397 dead with 3271 injured compared to last years 306 dead and 3070 injured.

May they rest in peace...

Songkran... a great way of keeping the numbers down!

You might want to go back to that newspaper and read the latest column by Wasant Techawongtham. Absolutely spot on.

I "played Songkran" the whole time in Pattaya. I love water so I really had a blast. At one point though on Soi 7 which seemed to be the hub of the party. I was crossing the street and it hit me that thank God nothing was going wrong.

The street was packed solid with scooters tanker trucks venders, you name it. Fortunately most of the time no one could hardly move. Every once in a while a space opened up and a scooter would blast through damn fast. Pretty crazy stuff.

Ok...

Before Songkran I saw on the BBC news, an article about how the production of coffins is upped in Thailand in the weeks leading up to the festival. I suppose they need to be ready.

Almost forgot Holi in India about a month ago. Hey ya only live a quadzillion bazillion times!wai2.gif

Only an interesting statistic if compared to the number of roads deaths on other 3-4 day periods. And when one considers the increased number of road miles traveled by the increased number of vehicles on the roads during the Songkran holiday period, it's probably near the expected number of road fatalities.

Still think the whole idea of standing about throwing water over people for 3 days is a pastime more suited to those with a limited intellect.

People dying in road accidents is a sad fact of life.

It will never change no matter what country you're talking about.

And it was 7 days here in Pattaya. You of course realize it is an ancient tradition that has "morphed" into a somewhat "spring breakish" occasion due to Western influence. Then there's KFC and MacDonald's but that'a a story for another day.

I should probably surrender my Medical License Immediately, LOL.

Again how are New Orleans Mardis Gras, Carnival, Holi, Key West Mardi Gras much different.? Answer people are pouring more booze than water, maybe.

Fact is I've been missing not being soaking wet in this heat. It was a great combo with an ice cold beer.

"People dying in road accidents is a sad fact of life." At least we can agree on something.

Yeah basically...sad for family and friends but who cares otherwise?

A pointless topic. 28 000 deaths a year ( and we all know that it's more than that) = 76 a day. 7 x 76 = 532. So this would actually be good news if we could believe it.

I care when people are hurt or killed without a good reason.

Thank you for pointing out that it's pointless.

But they were killed for a good reason...they were traveling on a public carriageway and this activity carries a certain amount of risk, which has to be weighed against the benefit of getting to where one wants to go.

Back in the states or other countries I've lived in. During New Years Celebrations we specifically stayed off the roads because of the shear volume of drunk drivers. We called it "Amature's Night." Over 62% of deaths were alcohol related.

"But they were killed for a good reason" pretty cold man.
