"These three planets are the first chance to find chemical traces of life outside our Solar System"

- Three Earth-like planets found
- Similar in size and temperature to our own
- More details could take 5-10 years

Scientists have found three new planets in space they say may be the most likely location for alien life they have yet discovered.

“These three planets are the first chance to find chemical traces of life outside our Solar System,” said astrophysicist Michaël Gillon.

Fact
They circle a star just 40 light-years away – the ultracool dwarf star “Trappist-1”.

Fact
They are all of a similar size, temperature and chemical composition to Earth.

Fact
They were detected using a 60cm infrared telescope based in Chile.

Fact
Exact information on their size and characteristics will take 5-10 years to obtain.

Question
They could be in the “habitable zone” of their host star – meaning living conditions could be similar to Earth.

And they are only 40 light years away ,so maybe its them that come to the earth ,beam up some hillybilly and give him an anal probe ,then go home .smile.png or whiz around the sky ,never getting in touch with us .

post-217497-0-38020600-1462244630_thumb.It is great to read about some other possible planets circling another star.

Pluto is the ninth planet circling our sun, but about ,maybe 10,000 people on our planet

made the decision for the rest of us on Earth ,that it could not be a planet, but only

a dwarf planet. Now don't worry, It is not because Pluto is so small, No, it has to do with

Pluto not being on the same plane as the other planets, because supposedly that Pluto

did not clear its orbit of all debris , but neither has Jupiter. I guess the other dwarf planets did

not help Pluto's case with their discovery as well.

....keep the funding coming....what a joke....

I agree, what has science ever done for us. There must be another godforsaken part of this planet that we can start another war and waste trillions of dollars.

To be pedantic - fact #2 is not entirely accurate. While they do seem to be about the same size as Earth, their chemical composition is not yet known and their average temperature is either hotter (for 2 planets) or colder. The green circle in the picture below shows the 'habitable zone' for this planet. The three planets should be tidally locked, which means that they should always have one face turned toward the sun and one away. It is possible that the cold sides of the two inner planets or the hot side of the outer planet may have conditions favorable to life as we know it.

Well that's it then! Holiday plans are off.

We could name two of them after Sanders and Cruz.

The one farthest from earth could be called...Hillary.

(based on Einsteins theory of relativity, her chances of getting to the white house are about the same as us getting to planet Hillary)

At 1,000mps (3.6 Million miles per hour) 186 years.

At 30,000 km/hr each light second would take 10 hours.

At that rate 1 light year would take

3600*24*365.24

31556736

answer*10

315567360

answer/365.24/24

36,000 YEARS

40 light years would take 40 x 36,000 years.

Holiday plans are off indefinitely.

My word, you must be desperate. Are you going to post this rubbish in every thread?

never thought of it...but you have a good idea there....for once.

Fact

"They are all of a similar size, temperature and chemical composition to Earth."

Why are we so miopic that we assume all potential life requires the same things life on our little planet requires?

We are but a speck of sand in the universe.

Only we think we are the most important speck.
