Hi, I have a couple questions regarding an upcoming trip to Thailand. Firstly, if a 23 year old American were to enter Thailand on the 15th of November, and his ticket is scheduled so that he will leave the 18th of December, this is more than the 30 days allowed on a permit to stay in the country.

Would this fact give him any problems getting into the country initially?

Also, if he gets in with no issues, will it be easier to seek a 7 day or so extension of the permit, or will it be easier to enter a neighboring country and return (assuming a re-entry resets the permit)?

Thanks for any advice.

He may have a problem getting on the airline as the old rule that many observed was no boarding without an onward ticket or visa during the 30 day allowed stay.

An extension of stay costs 1.900 baht if approved and from Bangkok (and most likely would be approved with show of ticket out) but it only costs 2,000 (or less) to make a border run (including Cambodia visa fee) and is a sure thing. Believe I would make plans to do a border run during the last week to obtain another 30 day stay myself if you don't mind the travel.

If you're entering Thailand on 11/15 then it depends if a Thai consulate is convenient for you to get that 60 day visa. One thing's for sure, you won't be mailing your passport in to capture that visa

He's a fair chance of being denied boarding without a visa. :o

All right, all right. All of your very helpful suggestions (terrifying warnings) have persuaded me to change my ticket so that I leave four days earlier, thus falling within the 30 day window. Thanks for your help!

You should have no problems boarding your plane as most people who enter Thailand will exit Thailand overland. They have never checked my onward ticket nor do I ever expect them to. The easiest thing to do is if ur in the south at any time with 30 days left to go is to step into Malaysia check out and back in to get a new 30 day entry permit.
