I have been getting non-imm "o" marriage visas for many years but (because I travel frequently, anyway) have never applied for the 1-year extension of stay.

Now I am planning to do so, but my current visa expires in December. I have just re-entered from the USA and have an entry stamp until Feb 6.

I have found the available information regarding this area to be ambiguous.

The question(s) is/are, when should I apply for extension? and, do I need to obtain another visa first?

Thanks for your help.

Apply in the middle of January, about two or three weeks before your leave to stay stamp expires.

January 7 or after should be the time to apply for an extension of stay (30 days remaining or less). Your current entry was on a non immigrant visa so no new visa is required.

Remember re entry permit(s) before travel after you apply.

don't mean to hijack but my situation is on topic...my one year multi-entry non-imm 'O' expires 21 Feb but I have to do a 90 day run on or before 26 Dec. Looks like I might want to hang around for awhile and not ship out on another overseas assignment anytime soon so an extension might be in order.

The 90 day run is before the last 30 days of the current visa and I will have to do a border run regardless that will make me legal until March. Do I do the extension application on 20 Jan or wait until 30 days before my last 90 days runs out?

You can extend during the last 30 days of any 90 day permitted to stay stamp. The visa date is not the factor - just your permitted to stay stamp. So February will be fine.
