ALRO to use Section 44 to take back Sor Por Kor land plots from encroachers



BANGKOK: -- The Office of Land Reform for Agriculture will withdraw the lawsuits filed against big-time encroachers on Sor Por Kor land plots from the court and to, instead, make use of the NCPO order issued under Section 44 of the interim charter to take back the encroached land plots.

ALRO secretary-general Sansern Atjumanas said that the office had set an eye on encroached land plots of more than 500 rai each in southern provinces which are to be wrestled back from the encroachers.

Altogether 427 land plots of over 500 rai each have been identified and diagrams of the land plots have been put up in their localities so that the encroachers were warned in advance and to report themselves to the provincial land reform offices with necessary documents to certify their land ownerships.

An informed source, meanwhile, identified three oil palm plantations in the South which are marked by ALRO to seize back the land estimated at 14,600 rai in total.

The source said that, previously, the Forest Department leased out degraded land to these companies to be developed into oil palm plantations under concession contracts. However, after the expiry of the concession periods, the companies have refused to move out.

I totally agree with your sentiment, but the so-called "judicial system" in Thailand is so skewed in favor of the rich and connected that this is possibly the best (and maybe the only) way for justice to be achieved.

Only problem is, Prayuth and Co. are also rich and connected.

When they get this land back, then what. Will it be put to any better purpose than it is at the moment. Is the plan to distribute it to poor or landless people, keep it for the Government or use it as rewards for loyal service to the Junta? Thousands of rai of palm oil plantation need managing and cannot be turned into farmland or back into proper forest easily. The most likely outcome is to invite new bids for further concessions to manage it as palm oil plantations which is a process which beckons corruption in with both hands.
