Passport required for Thais making day trips to Myanmar?

Recommended Posts

Thais can get the border pass to cross the border at Mae Sai and visit Tachileik town on Myanmar side using their Thai national ID. Border pass is good enough for sight seeing trip to Tachileik. However, border pass holders can not travel further into Myanmar beyond town limit of Tachileik.

A Thai friend of mine visited Myanamar for a holiday last year and she required a passport and a visa.

Thais need a passport if going to Myanmar by flight, not overland. Visa is not required for a stay of up to 14 days.

Just as you get into the town of Mae Sai, on the left, there is an immigration place where Thais get the border pass to cross the border. Costs 30 THB.

About a year ago I asked about the validity of the pass and was told a Thai person can stay in Myanmar for up to 1 week and is not limited to the border town. Many years ago, before the border pass was established, Thai people could just walk through the bridge, no immigration, no stamps, and at the time the stay was limited for the day only (had to return before the bridge was closed) and to a perimeter of about 5 Km' around the town
