Anyone in the Khao San area? Peachy guesthouse?

Featured Replies

Am trying to get an on-the-ground confirmation about my long-time little go-to place on Phra Arthit (Artit) road (next to the river), a few blocks away from Khao San Road and the Royal Palace -- Peachy guesthouse.

Is anyone nearby in the area, or pass through there on the way somewhere, would be so kind as to have a look, maybe snap a picture or two.  The lobby area is ground floor at the sidewalk.

It's been 4 years, and I have a short stop-off in BKK this September, would like to plan out what I can now.  Likewise would like to know how the little place is doing (or isn't?), stayed there way back in 2004.

Thank you for any help, appreciated.

Are you sitting down? I have some bad news for you. Its gone. RIP. The End. Finnee.

This the one with the courtyard that could of been an old hospital or something. Cheap. Basic. Shared bathroom? Old school?

I stayed there in 02 and was staying on the same Soi in March. A sad. day.

The Merry V Guesthouse is still there on Soi Chana Songkhram if you want old skool..

JiuJitsu, thanks a lot for that recommendation.  An internet search brings up "New" Merry V Guesthouse, located directly on Phra Arthit road, not inside a soi....  I don't know if there's also an "old" Merry V as well? ....  Just confirming, it's single room with dormitory like bathrooms?

New Merry V is on Phra Athit. The original Merry V is on Soi Chanasongkhram. Proper backpacker guest house, not a flashpacker guest house.

Yep. And seriously unless you are strapped for cash I would suggest elsewhere. Last time I was there in 2012 ish it was 120 baht a night upwards.

It might not be yours or my choice, but some might prefer the simple life. I had no problem with it back in the day. In fact I used to help them out behind the counter just for fun.

Bang!  Thank you for saying exactly what I wanted to.  The simple life actually worked for me...  I was going to post a few thoughts about Peachy GH, but you never know whose going to be "offended" or something.  I will say this -- when I stayed there, I'd get my night's sleep, wake up late (9 or 10am), get a shower, and get the HECK out on the town all day.  No Khao San for me.  I'd never get back until midnight or 1am .  Why?  Perhaps it was the extreme simpleness / unattractiveness of it, as well as the grime of KSR in general, that actually motivated me to go out all day and all night.  And stay away from the area.   Actually worked out well.

I'll also say this.  In my heyday of going there (I lived in Cambodia for 2 years, for example) I'd show up at Peachy every one or two months.  I'd come walking around that corner and stand at the front desk -- I wouldn't say a word, and the staff wouldn't even greet me.  It was just, "room you stay last time not open now, but have room in back, if you like", or, "room you stay two time ago open tonight, if you want."  I'd hardly say anything but "Khap", drop a little money, and be up there for shower and sleep.

The ladies there weren't especially cordial, but they got to know you quick, and there was a rather wordless connection.  If I knew where those 3 ladies end up working (a nearby GH?), I'd definitely drop by and check it out.
