Ports to be outfitted with monitoring equipment to tackle illegal fishing

BANGKOK, 30 August 2016 (NNT) - Thailand’s efforts to tackle illegal fishing are nearing completion, as it hastens to install new monitoring technology at over 900 ports.

The Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing announced its progress in tackling illegal fishing. Recently, the center has put the finishing touches on its vessel database, while tracking devices installed on fishing boats will now enable authorities to monitor all offshore operations by Thai vessels.

The center will outfit 16 port stations with monitoring equipment, in time for an upcoming visit by EU officials in November. The EU officials will consider the effectiveness of legislation, law enforcement and vessel monitoring systems.
