NLA makes plans to accommodate Thailand’s aging society

BANGKOK, 9 November 2016 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly has deliberated on a plan to help the country prepare for an aging society.

The NLA committee on public health on Tuesday held a meeting to discuss the situation and the plan to prepare Thailand for a rise in the number of elderly citizens in the future.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Social Development and Human Security, the Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Board and the President of the Senior Citizens Council of Thailand.

All agreed that Thailand is entering a phase where the elderly will increase in number over the next 15 years. It is anticipated that in 2031, the number of senior citizens will represent 16.5% of the total population.

It is also estimated that the average age of elderly Thai men and women will be seventy-five by then. and 75% of them will still be in the workforce while income support from younger members of the family will have come down.

The Social Development Ministry has already begun working with related agencies to implement policies for the elderly that cover all aspects of life in order to help them continue to be active members of the workforce.

Other arrangements have also been prepared, including development of the quality of life, and a system of care as well as a savings program.

Easy to criticise but have to have the discussion. It is the reality most countries face. As a service based employment sector, Thailand should be able to gear itself on this one better than most given wage rates and demand for casual particpation, even if the family unit does most of the caring across the community.  See nothing inherent in that article to knock.

Atrocious that there is no viable social system in place which forces people to slave away their entire lives.

Welfare could make Thais become lazy.

Thats not my opinion but that of a famous influential Thai. No one dares discuss that subject any further, if you know what I mean.
